I think it is a big deal…any viral infection that causes swelling on the spinal cord or the brain is serious.

Well, yea, compared to bacterial and fungal, it isn't as big of a problem, but I wouldn't say it isn't a big deal.

It's a pretty big deal. My Grandmother died from bacterial meningitis. It sounds like they caught it early so he will probably recover quickly. It usually isn't caught because the best way to identify it is through a spinal tap which isn't a super common procedure to perform on someone who has a fever and a stiff neck.
