I died the first couple of times I fought him, so I went back up to retrieve my blood echoes and I got back on the ladder real quick to go back down and he just jumped off trying to kill me. So I collected my loot at the bottom of the ladder.

I was doing fine until I got to the guys who had poisonous snakes coming out of their heads. I could handle them easily 1 on 1 but I dropped off a ledge somewhere and next thing I know there were 4 of them coming down on me. I feel like maybe I was close to the boss?

There is a gate, shortcut you can open up to the boss, that's guarded by a single enemy.
Use ranged attacks with a spear or the axe. They'll hardly ever touch you.

shadow boss down - first try but it was intense... used every blood vial, bullet, molotov and bolt paper
