Why won't Les Miles just come out and say that he's staying at LSU?

Even if he's never contacted by Michigan the rumors are still there, and Les knows that. He could easily squash this by saying that he's staying and that his agent is not pursuing the job for him either.

Because the job just officially came open yesterday.

Even if you're not interested right now, you don't just shut off all your options immediately. It's not smart.

He could...but he also got a raise because the arky job was open. At this point (if I'm less) even if I'm staying I sit back and see what you guys do this time.

Because like any other smart employee, he's going to leverage outside interest for a raise.

The meltdown will be fricking glorious.

He likes the attention (as do most people). I really think this could work out well for everyone. I think Miles is a better fit at Michigan. The level of competition would be lower and they would be happy "being in the hunt" again as opposed to the championship expectations at LSU. The whole situation at LSU has gotten stale (just like Richt at UGA and Stoops at OU). All good coaches but seems like they are constantly underachieving despite plenty of talent.

He needs to try to finagle a raise first

You don't say that because it goes against every principle of negotiation.

Overstate your initial demands.

Appear like you have better options.

Feign reluctance to maintain the status quo.

Well wouldn't that be a distraction & deterrent for the recruits that are committed and the ones Miles is still recruiting?

I agree this is likely to happen but honestly don't care. When a school is done with you, they are done with you. Why not get everything you can out of it.

If your boss knew that a job was opening that you are perfectly qualified, yet you had no desire to leave your current job. Would you tell him...."don't worry about trying to keep me here because I'm not interested in the other job?"

Or would you let him sweat a little and get a raise out the situation?

Les said last week he is happy at LSU and isn't looking for another job. Guess that was ignored by the crazies on this board

As I said, the job hasn't officially been open for even 24 hours.

He's not saying anything yet because playing it close to the vest is in HIS best interest.

People aren't sleeping on this one. We'll know something from somebody soon enough.

Isn't that the standard coach-speak line when in fact their agents are out pursuing these openings for them?

Guess you ignored the part in bold. You know, before the UM job came open?
