LSU could beat bama if they gave the state 1 dollar instead of millions

I am all for LSU not taking any state subsidy, but why does LSU give the state millions of dollars. Why not invest all money in the program.
*of course LSU refers to the football program since this is the tiger rant, and not the academic part.

i understand your point, but you really need to word it better
also, i do not think i can disagree more
LSU is a University with a football program, not a football program with a University

Yep
Sadly, I'm thinking a lot of posters will disagree with you.

The football program needs the university much more than the university needs the football team.
Remove "LSU" from the helmet and see how many pay to watch a child's game. It's all about the LSU.

That applies to every school. Unfortunately, not many athletic programs refuse to take public money and donate money back to the University.

Its a valid statement. A lot of people who would oppose the football program giving money to the university are people who only have ties to the football program. Its not a slap in the face to point that out.

so you are trying to tell me that people would actually not care about LSU being a top-tier research institution and having a top faculty for its students?

LSU is the worst treated "flagship" school in the country by far
Posted on 12/1/14 at 2:27 pm to Rouge
Money should absolutely be given to the University. Football programs should be treated like an investment as the school must fund the program to kickstart it. Bama does indeed have an advatage here, but that doesn't make it right. They are ok with it because they have no soul. (They have both a ginger and a midget so it's not even debatable)

That'll end a thread

This strikes me as incredibly simplistic. Of course the football team needs the university - without it the football team definitionally wouldn't exist. But the football team gives money back to the university - a university that has been in deep financial trouble for years. We know where the football team would be without the university: nonexistent. But where would the university be without the football team? My guess is teetering ever closer to the edge of financial collapse; it's already unsustainable without a subsidy from the football team.
The false dichotomy that seems to exist in some fans' minds between the university and the football program needs to be eliminated. Both entities depend on the other to continue functioning. It's silly to even consider seriously which one "needs" the other more, because both need the other, period.
As for the OP, I'm not sure how much additional monetary investment would fix LSU's current streak against Alabama, and as I said above I don't think it's wise to reconsider moving money away from the university given its current financial state. Maybe we can revisit this question once the higher education system in this country collapses and a new one is put in place that requires the kind of financial responsibility that would allow LSU to fund itself, but until we're there, that money has to stay with the university.

He's saying the AD shouldn't give that 5% to the general fund. Dumb thought. If we need money to pay off refs, I don't think it needs to come from the GF.

It gives everyone not named LSU a financial advantage.
According to USA Today, LSU is the only SEC school that doesn't receive some sort of subsidies. And the donation made to the University is the only one of its kind.
May be the right thing to do, but it is a financial hit that other ADs don't have to deal with.

Absolutely. Half the state is full of Walmart Tigers that couldnt name 5 academic programs at LSU without guessing.
"Well, they gotta have math. Yeah, im gonna say one is math"
Cut to drinking at a bar. How do you think LSU is going to do this year?
(Never assuming you werent talking about football) "Well, i think WE......"

I see no reason to soft peddle this. As a graduate of LSU, married to a graduate, with a child currently matriculated there, I have a vested interest in the academic side of the university. It is a UNIVERSITY, one that has been gutted by unfair state budget cuts for far too long.
I recognize that non-alums (particularly their money) are very important to the success of college football programs. But that doesn't mean that I have to like them. I have for years believed that alumni should get some sort of bone thrown their way when it comes to season ticket priority, as many other schools do, but no.
