Who: Massachusetts Minutemen (Amherst, MA)
When: Tuesday, December 2, 6:00pm
Where: PMAC (13,215, 45th NCAA)
How:
***TV: SECN
***Radio: 98.1FM
***Stream: SECN via ESPN3.com

LSU takes on Massachusetts in the PMAC to kick off the most important out of conference week of the season. They will also head to #21 West Virginia on Thursday night taking part in the SEC/Big12 challenge.

LSU survived Saturday night vs McNeese St without leading scorer, rebounder, and blocker, Jordan Mickey, who was held out of competition due to a minor injury. Jarell Martin put up another new career high in points with 26. LSU also got an unexpected jolt of offensive production from 6'4" power forward, Brian Bridgewater, who scored 16 in 22 minutes.

On that same night, UMASS went into Harvard and almost beat a very good Harvard team who started the year in the top 25. UMASS had a 45-36 lead with 18:00 left in the second half before squandering the lead late in the game and missing a game winning shot as the time expired. The Minutemen had 5 double figure scorers.

Projected Starters:

LSU
Josh Gray (6'1" 182 Jr) 10.7PPG, 4.5APG
Keith Hornsby (6'4" 210 Jr) 12.3PPG, 5.2RPG
Jarell Martin (6'10" 236 So) 16.5PPG, 9.3RPG
Jordan Mickey (6'8" 235 So) 17.8PPG, 10RPG, 1.8BPG
John Odo (6'10" 245 Sr) 2.3PPG, 1.5RPG

UMASS
Trey Davis (6'0" 185 Jr) 11.3PPG, 2.7APG
Derrick Gordon (6'3" 205 Jr) 13.6PPG, 3.4APG, 5RPG
Seth Berger (6'7" 210 So) 2.3PPG, 2.1RPG, 1.4SPG
Maxie Esho (6'8" 215 Sr) 13.1PPG, 6.4RPG, 1.0SPG
Cady Lalanne (6'10" 253 Sr) 14.9PPG, 10RPG, 2.4BPG

The Minutemen will be one of the bigger teams LSU will play this season and they use their height to get to the free throw line. UMASS scores nearly 30% of their points from the charity stripe. They have already taken 221 free throws compared to LSU's 106. They also shoot a very respectable 72.9% from the free throw line. They have 5 different players who have made over 20 free throws this season (LSU has 1).

LSU will have to stay out of foul trouble against the Minutemen, and that will be a very difficult task. UMASS has forced at least 1 player to get 4 fouls in each of their games, and they have forced 6 players to foul out of games. With LSU's lack of depth, foul trouble can be a major problem. LSU will need to keep the perimeter players from penetrating into the lane as much as possible to help prevent post players fouling slashing guards.

UMASS only makes 29.1% of their three pointers and only 13.9% of their points come from beyond the arc (6th lowest % in country) so forcing UMASS to shoot the basketball from deep could be one way to try and stop the Minutemen offense.

On defense, LSU should be able to get the ball inside, but watch out for Cady Lalanne who averages 2.4 blocks per game. Lalanne had 16 points in the meeting between these two schools last season. In that matchup, LSU had 5 players pick up 4 fouls and Jarell Martin was injured in the first minute of the game. Such circumstances would not be a winning recipe in this years match-up.

The tempo in this game should be wild. While LSU is expected to be a team that likes to push tempo, the Minutemen are even faster averaging only 15.4 seconds per possession and nearly 73 possessions per game (LSU averages 16.5 seconds per possession and 69.9 possessions per game). If LSU can stay out of foul trouble, look for a great game and a possible LSU victory.

Prediction:
LSU 78, UMASS 81

I hope we can pull it out. I am not very encouraged right now. Martin is struggling mightily outside of some highlight reel stuff and Hornsby's shot has been very sub par. Those guys need to get it going. The good news is that this team hasn't gelled yet and is capable of more. That is, however, is also the bad news right now.

I'm really worried about getting into foul trouble in this one. Without Mickey this weekend, we didn't look very good. We can't lose Mickey or Martin for extended minutes and expect to win against UMASS.

That being said, LSU could win this game and I wouldn't be surprised. They haven't been making many shots so getting to the rim needs to be something they really look to do.

I think this is the game where you rotate in some bench bigs early and let them take the fouls. Malone and Robinson could eat up 6-7 fouls in the game sparing us trouble for Martin or Mickey.

Weird that no one fouled out with all those foul calls.

Did I miss something last week? Why Odo over Robinson?

Last two games, Odo has started over Robinson. He has actually played pretty good in his minutes. Brings a little bit more offense than Robinson, and rebounds at least as good.

Epps was in street clothes at the game on Saturday. Mickey is suppose to be available, but I doubt we get Epps back. No word yet on him.

Epps' knee just isn't ready. Not for live action games. That's the word I got.

Bridge proved he would be All-Conference in the Southland but I am still 100% concerned about him in the SEC. Just don't see how 6'4 PF works vs the conference. Bad enough McNeese scored at will in the paint.

Too bad Dupree can't play!! Haha

Lastly, TQ has been phenomenal. To me, 2nd best player behind Mickey right now. Gray, Jarell, and Hornsby have been too inconsistent. Maybe 3rd behind Jarell if you remove the atrocious outside shooting (has regressed). TQ is a difference maker with his size and ability to contribute across the board. Tough to argue anyone plays with more heart on the court than he has been.

I agree that Quarterman has been phenomenal. I love what he brings to the offense and the defense. He still has some work on his three pointers, but he has driven to the hoop alot more often. He has made 15 of 24 from 2 point range and has the highest 2pt % on the team (outside of Odo's 4/5). Add the fact that he has been great making decisions on passes and he has been a serious catalyst for this team.

Once again, I'm right with you here. The only reason I even consider it possible he contributes in SEC play is Shavon Coleman who did it at 6'6", but even then, they are different players. Still, Bridgewater was very important to LSU this past weekend and he has very nice touch around the rim. We almost have to play zone with him in though cause a 6'4" cannot defend a post player one on one. Just won't work.

IMO this is LSU's most glaring problem. Whether it is coaching, the players, or a combination of both, it is clear that LSU simply has no desire to try to keep opponents out of the paint. That is the case regardless of the opponent. It looks as if LSU's MO on defense is to play for a TO on the perimeter, but let people get in the lane with the expectation (hope?) that their length and height will affect/block enough shots at the rim. It was a problem all of last season, and has been a problem in the first 6 games of this year. Just like LSU's predictable/conservative offensive approach in football, things are not going to change as the year goes on. We have to just get used to it.

In all honesty I think LSU should start TQ at the 3 and go to a zone defense from the tip. With the way LSU defends coupled with UMass's "want" to get their opponent in foul trouble, this could be a very unfavorable matchup for LSU.

Agreed 100%. They don't have a chance to beat TTU without him, and there may have been more losses if he doesn't play as well as he has thus far.

I'm almost never for LSU playing zone, because I think only teams that practice zone 100% of the time can run it correctly, but I think I agree that going zone full time in this one could end up helping LSU.

I really hate the idea of LSU in a zone, but UMASS' ability to get into the lane and get fouled scares me. Add the fact that the Minutemen dont shoot well from the three point line and it gives me a little hope it would help LSU.

i think they play their best game of the year and win a close one. this team just seems like it will fall in line with the last two, unpredictable and frustrating at times but a high ceiling when they play to their capabilities.

play some defense too please

He has! I'm quite impressed with the improvement he's shown over the offseason. Makes me excited to see how other players develop under CJJ.

If this could be the game Hornsby and Gray breaks out as the players we expected we will have a great chance to win. Mickey and Martin have been as expected TQ is contributing extremely well.
