I just spent 10 minutes deleting 9 gigs worth of messages and now 95% of them all reappeared.
How do I get them off my phone to clear the 9 gigs?

Delete the conversations and then wait. It takes several minutes to clear that 9 GBs.
I'm guessing you turned off/on the phone after deleting them?

I just deleted the wifeys txt only and it saved me 4 gigs.
