It's not the gun, it's the sick bastard that used it. Blaming the gun is as stupid as blaming the pencil for a wrong test answer.

"I'm sorry there weren't more people with guns in the area. Maybe the perp would have been killed before he got to your son/daughter."

How would you explain your support of gun rights?
the future is highly uncertain given the speed of technological advancement and we need guns as a safeguard against tyrannical armed-government forces and potentially AI terminator type shite.
This is assuming I'd have to explain my support of gun rights --- that the victim's family member is opposed to gun rights is quite an assumption (disclaimer, I don't even own a gun and have never shot anything more powerful than a 22)

How would you explain your support of gun rights?
Have you ever had to console someone about a death?
Ever?
Once?
So let's make the presumption this was long after the grieving process was over.
==========
How would I help them support their view of gun rights to you?
Perhaps I'd suggest they start by reading the Constitution aloud? I would hold it for them as they read it to you. Then I would discuss the value of liberty and justice with them, as well as the dearth of our present generation's Constitutional understanding. We'd discuss the 2d Amendment. Then we'd call it a day.
