When the rioters are fired up, indignant and raging, I don't think self preservation comes to mind.

Look at Michael Brown. He was shot in the hand walked away and then started back for the officer who he knew to be armed.

well for one, there aren't many businesses left, the ones who could do so, relocated. And as I said in my first post, some were scared, others couldn't (because they didn't have anything to defend their businesses with) and again, there may have been and no one is talking about it.

first round, there was that strip mall with the owners all brandishing rifles while everything around them, except their stores, burned.

it's a multitude of things and yes fear is surely a big one...it sucks all around. This definitely isn't helping the poverty problem in Ferguson

I feel like these riots are black suicide and there of course are other victims, but that's just what it feels like

they knew white guilt would prevail and it did...the police boarded up and stayed home

and yes, Michael brown's actions and those of the ferguson rioters are indicative of people who are not used to consequences...decades of everyone else walking on egg shells around them.

It seems boarding up and placing signs that state if you come in, I am going to perceive it as a threat and kill you - and then carrying out on that promise - would be completely legally defensible.

I supposed I could walk around wearing a shirt that says "If you don't praise Allah I'm going to perceive it as a threat and kill you" and just whack any non-Muslims I like, right?

The left has pushed a "don't protect yourself" narrative, unfortunately, as a part of their anti-gun agenda.

There would have been no-win environment for a shop owner, just as there was a no-win environment for the authorities. So, if they call ole boy or ole girl's bluff and fools started getting blown away - it would have been World War Ferguson (and I know it seems that way on television, but if that one cat is the only fatality, that is, overall, a fairly positive outcome of the last 24 hours, despite all the property damage).

Why did it not happen?

I think many store owners might choose not to defend their stores with guns because they know after the riots are over the word will get around the community which store owners shot at members of the community and the lives of those store owners as well as their family members will be in grave danger.

Did anyone mention that if you decided to protect your store with deadly force, you may be essentially shutting down your business forever, at least in that location.

A better question is why does anyone want to sell stuff in an area that is full of animals?

I discussed this with a family member who is a small business owner, like others here have already said, he said he would check with his insurance, and make sure he was covered, secure the place, go home, and wait. He said that while he would love to stand his ground and protect the business, there is no guarantee he would prevail, and his family needs him alive more than they need the business.
