Outside of UK and UF of course.

Lack of fanfare causing the schools to not put as much emphasis on the sport ? Lack of decent coaches ? Arms race in football left basketball by the wayside ?

Just seems weird for the conference to be this down for so long now.

Coaching (and recruiting) is even more important in basketball than in football due to the ability of one or two players to control the entire game.

I don't know much about SEC basketball arenas and facilities but I know LSU's was older (correct?) This might also be a factor in attracting the best coaches.

I think it's coaching and in turn recruiting.

A&M is going to be good this year.

Tons of talent and we got two impact players cleared after our one close loss to Dayton.

Partly coaches, partly so much parity, partly bc players can go pro earlier than football, plus a lot more overseas options in basketball. A lot of enticing schools for basketball players to play for.

It makes no sense.

The hotbed of awesome black athletic talent and the conference sucks.

I have never understood it.

Kids can play basketball in the north year around.

That's another reason, the talent is much more spread out than football.

At least part of it is that recruits want to play against tough competition. Factoring out the bluebloods, your average ACC school will have a tougher conference schedule than your average SEC school. That also helps with national recognition and postseason placement, among other things.

Yeah...you don't need good weather to play basketball.

Talent can sprout and does sprout anywhere...talent pool is greater opportunity...unlike football, where it's Cali, Florida and Texas, etc...warm weather places.

tSEC is one of the best conferences in basketball.....probably 2nd best behind the ACC.

How many titles does the big10 have within the last 20 years?

Big12?

Pac12?

Not very many....

It really just depends on how you rate and value a conference, but depth is certainly a large factor and the SEC is at the bottom of the barrel with the Pac-12 as far as depth year in and year out.

So congrats to the big10 & big12 on having a bunch of middle of the road teams who can't win the big games.

The SEC is fine at the top with Kentucky and Florida carrying the load, but top to bottom, it doesn't measure up. UK and UF don't have problems with recruiting and coaching, this thread is more about the rest of the league.

I've been watching CBB since 1984...

It's always been Kentucky.

And sometimes another team like Arkansas or LSU would show up for a few years...and then fade to oblivion.

Same with the Pac-12

It's always been UCLA and Arizona...sometimes a Cal might pop in there with Jason Kidd or Stanford would make a run...but it's really a two school basketball conference.

And the SEC is a one school basketball conference.

SEC-1

Funny that Florida has just as many NCs in basketball as your entire pac12 conference since you've been watching in 1984

So since Florida is irrelevant in college bball, then I guess the entire pac12 conference (ucla included) is irrelevant & nonexistent when it comes to ncaa basketball.

Meh, new money.

You really think Florida is a B-ball school?

I think once Billy D leaves, they be gone.

But Arizona survived Lute Olson and UCLA survived Wooden.

Are you seriously trying to argue about this? The SEC will probably only get 3 teams into the tournament this year, and Arkansas will only get in because the SEC sucks so much. Using your titles argument, the ACC must have been a pretty good football conference last year.

So the number of titles by a conference determines the depth and strength of a conference?

pretty stupid to measure the strength of an entire conference off an achievement only one team in the nation can achieve each year.

the SEC is top heavy but recent results in conference matchups (ie Big 12 vs SEC), along with conference RPI, conference SoS, # of teams ranked, etc would be a true indicator of the strength of a conference.
