New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson has made an $11 million pledge to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the largest donation in the Hall's 51-year history.

Of the $11 million gift, $10 million will go toward renovation of the 76-year-old Fawcett Stadium. The venue, which hosts the Hall of Fame's annual enshrinement ceremony and the Hall of Fame Game, will be renamed "Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium."

Benson is due to receive hundreds of millions in state subsidies.

After investing a fortune in the Big Easy, New Orleans Saints and Pelicans owner Tom Benson became known as the billionaire betting on a struggling state. Now the richest man in Louisiana — worth $1.2 billion — Benson is set to rake in an estimated $392 million from state subsidies through 2025.

He's getting about 1/2 of that from increased revenue generated by the Superdome.

quote:

The renovation added 3,500 lower level seats, and average attendance increased by 2,937 per game from 2009 to 2011. The Saints hiked ticket prices 21%, but the stadium stayed packed. With more fans in the Superdome paying more money to be there, the team brings in an estimated $11 million more in ticket revenue per season after the renovations.

The state is making money off the deal

quote:

As part of the deal, Benson agreed to pay $42 million to buy a parking garage, shopping mall and 26-story tower next to the Superdome, according to the Times-Picayune. The tower had been vacant since it was damaged during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, but the state promised to move its administrative offices to the building as part of the deal.

That building was rotting and needed millions in work to gut it. It was an eye sore to the entire city. Benson has made the entire area very nice.

There was absolutely zero weekend business open by the Dome in the years after Katrina. The Saints sparked that area's improvement
