Darren Wilson became a cop to retire with a pension, not to serve and protect.

My question is why the excessive shots? The head shot, which came after, seemed excessive to me.

To LSUfanalways:

I'll add to what others have explained very well so far.

It is pretty well documented when you face what you feel is a real threat to your life your instinct will take over to a certain extent.

Even with training and practice it is in ones nature to look at the threat directly. This conflicts with focusing on the front sight of the gun to make an aimed shot. Some refer to this as "tunnel vision" or "target fixation".

A pistol has a very short barrel. You do not have to be off very much to miss, especially if one or both parties are moving (both Wilson (backpedaling) and Brown (charging) were moving for most shots)). Even well practiced "point shooting" without the sights is only effective at very short ranges (less than 10-15 feet).

12 cases were recovered, 7 gunshot wounds per Autopsy:

Shot 1: In the car with gun being held by Brown pointed toward door panel (apparently resulted in a hit to Brown's hand).

Shot 2: In the car with one arm still held up to shield blows. Single handedly aiming in Brown's direction. Miss to ground according to testimony.

Shots 3-12 (10 shots): While Wilson was backpedaling and Brown was charging: 6/10 hits. Final aimed shot when Brown was maybe only 10 or so feet away from him.

Keep in mind Brown started charging some 30 feet away and Wilson says he was backpedaling. So 60% is not too bad with that distance and both parties moving (target and shooter).

I'm not an LEO but at my peak I shot 1000 rounds a month in Practical Pistol Matches. It sounds easy and the distances sound close until you try it out. Static targets that aren't a threat are one thing. Once you introduce any kind of movement (whether it is you or the target moving) the difficulty to hit goes up exponentially. Once you add a perceived threat to your life add even more difficulty to the shot.

TL:DR Wilson is not a bad shot. The force was not excessive. Wilson shot until the threat ceased as he is trained to do.

Poor training

Always count your shots so when you do a magazine change you still have a round in the chamber and covering the threat

That sounds great at the range but I seriously doubt any real person can do this under true duress.

There is not much point either. Most are gonna go to slide lock if you are truly in fear for your life.

And nobody is going to practice some bullshite magazine retention either when they are being shot at.

You'll go to slide lock, drop the mag and reload a fresh magazine and get back to shooting if need be.

Of course. But you should always revert back to training if it's done enough.

Always remember the story of the Texas highway patrol officer shot at point blank range in a shoutout. He was reloading a revolver and had 2 rounds in and let the guy walk right up on him while reloading. It's believed that all the years off shooting till empty then fully reloading had him programmed.

Agree though. Easier said than done

Daryl Parks just said on CNN that the stepfather was upset and said "Burn this bitch down" because he was angry that the DA had somewhat blamed Mike Brown for the incident while revealing the no bill.

The step father did not hear the reveal. He was with the mom out in the crowd and only heard "not guilty." There is tape, dumbass.

Sure he was angry.. But starting a riot???? Why isn't he in jail????? And as for Parks he is almost as bad as Sharpton as far as a racist goes....... He st there and watched what Brown did in the store and acted like MB wasn't doing anything harmful to the owner of store.... OK. At THAT point MB is a a criminal and when he sees the cop, Maybe he freaks realizing that the store owner called the cops.. MB'S attitude changes like WTF?? Is this cop after me for acting like a thug and robbing a store and what do I do now....

THink about it.......

Parks was watching the video and said Mike Brown did not "put his hands" on the store owner as the video is showing Mike Brown shove the guy.

This Parks guy is fricking entertaining. He had me rolling on channel after channel last night and he is still at it.

Him saying Louis Head was reacting to the statements of the DA saying "Burn this bitch down" when there is video showing Head not able to hear the reveal is beyond the pale.

So upset over the loss of his stepson that was living with his grandmother instead of his mother and stepfather, apparently in the same neighborhood.

Hmmm.

No, that's a good way to get yourself killed. Absolutely dumbest shite ever. You can't count your rounds under real stress. Real stress that can't be simulated in training.
