Helix Season 1 Question (spoilers)

Just finished season 1 on NetFlix and this show seemed to change directions so quickly at the end that I'm not sure what I saw. I thought that the virus/cure was what brought about the silver eyes/immortality. But then they go and say Hitaki is over 500 years old and the storyline changes from Zombie Apocalypse to Highlander There Can Be Only 500? Does Julia have the silver eyes from genetics or the cure?
