They could easily run for a first down if you put enough people off the LOS.

Not if you also have 5 WRs or something off the line. THink about it, if what you said is so, why would punt teams line up 5 WRs wide with today's rules if it would be so easy to run for a 1st?

Like I said earlier, teams still have to play for the fake punt/pass or run today, how would this change anything?

Why are you trying to make it easier for the offense to gain a first down?

Precisely. It just adds more things for the return team to have to do in order to gain possession. Namely, don't let the punting team catch the punt.

It just gives them more options and it's fricking retarded.

But I do agree with you. More teams should work on giving the punter a punt/run/pass option it is open often.

Really only would take one safety return guy.

The gunners on the outside could call a fair catch if it was anywhere near them. Would just require some communication by the return team.

It would take a lot for it to go right for the punting team.

I don't like this as a new rule, but I don't think it would change too much.

In fairness, no one would ever try this so it's a moot point.

Like I mentioned, the only time it could come into play with today's game, it wouldn't as guys would just fair catch balls inside the 5, so you'd never see your idea in play

Why do you think the defense just deserves the ball on an offensive down? Why don't you think the offense should be able to play the ball on an offensive down?

But punting it would give them the best of both worlds.

It's a stupid fricking idea.

Worse than the two stage pass interference rule for intercepted passes, but not by much.

It wouldn't.

The world where you catch the punt is 99% failure world, that's not the best of any world when you add in the fact that the punt team would be giving up 20+ yards in field position for that 1% success rate.

No one would try it but maybe once per season for a team, nothing like your assertion to do it every time or whatever.

There was a similar rule to this in the first decade of the 1900's, but it didn't last long.
It was part of opening up the game, along with legalizing the forward pass.

Interesting. They should have kept it. The forward pass seemed to work.
