Caught some Matt Smith episodes on BBC America and really liked them so I started watching the renewed series on Netflix.

Just finished the first season and I'm wondering if there are any essential episodes from the original run that I should go back and watch before continuing.

I was getting ready to answer in the affirmative but now that I think about it, there are no "essential" episodes.

Since you've started (I presume) at the beginning of the new series and are not surprised that someone other than Matt Smith is the Doctor, I guess you have at least heard about the concept of "regeneration" and what a Time Lord is, etc.

If not, you should be able to pick up the basics quickly by starting at the beginning of the new series.

If there is one original story that would come close to essential, I would say it's Genesis of the Daleks, as that fleshes out the origins of the Daleks (the Doctor's greatest enemies) and kind of retroactively foreshadows why there was a Time War between the Daleks and the Time Lords in the first place.

Now that I think of it, The Deadly Assasin (stupid title aside) is a good one as it really introduces the Time Lords in depth for the first time and fleshes out the Master and his motivations really well.

Not quite as essential as Genesis due to the fact that the Time Lords have been changed around a lot over the years and the primary trigger for the Master's actions in this episode and many following ones featuring him is apparently no longer valid.

Word I'll check that one out.

I get the regeneration and Daleks being evil but don't really understand how the timeline as the Doctor knew it changed. Is that gonna be explained/do the Daleks time travel too or is it just one of those things in time travel shows/movies that you have to not scrutinize too much

Yes, the Daleks have time travel capability. It will be explained how some of the Daleks escaped the Time War but at the same time, some of the various explanations won't be great so it probably is a good idea not to scrutinize it too much.

Between the old series and the new series, there have been a ton of stories so beyond some very basic parameters, the history of it all is getting pretty jumbled.

The Daleks can time travel.

I'm gonna cast a vote for Caves of Androzani from the original series. It was on Netflix. It's widely acclaimed to be one of the best of the original series. And it has the best cliffhanger in the show's history at the end of episode 3

I'm not a big stickler for any time travel rules as long as the story/drama/character development is good.

eta- is the '96 movie worth a watch?

I'm not a fan of the movie really. It will probably just confuse you as it changes major parts of canon in an attempt to win American audiences.

Caves of andronazi and city of death are 2 of the very best series old or new.

You can understand nearly all of new who without watching old who - up until this season. It has made lots of references that you will miss if you aren't at least familiar with the older doctors.

The 96 movie was pretty weak. It came at a time when fans were hungry, so we ate it up and tried to convince ourselves it was good. I mean if a Doctor Who TV movie ran on Fox today and they said the Doctor was half human, people would go apeshit and break the Internet.
