NEED HELP: failure configuring windows updates. reverting changes

My SO's laptop has been doing this every couple of days.
Tonight it spent over an hour "installing updates", it made it to 90 something percent, and gave me the failure configuring windows updates. reverting changes message.
it's now been over an hour and a half stuck on the failure configuring windows updates. reverting changes screen.
What can I do? Do I just have to wait it out? Can I force restart? I can't afford to risk losing access or info on the hard drive.
The Internet has been absolutely no help to me so far. And Microsoft can eat me.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

This is a very common problem with Windows 8.x. It should reboot a few times, each time doing that same routine, but after 3-4 times of rebooting and getting stuck at that screen, it will eventually reboot back into the desktop. But this post was made hours ago, so you probably realized that by now.
If you attempt to do updates again, you will run into the same problem.
There are ways of fixing it, but the easiest way to do so is to just refresh the OS.
