Nothing, but you're wasting your time. There are people here that are completely thrilled with his first 2 seasons for some reason.

Mediocre is too high. The guy is an excellent recruiter and a bad coach. I totally agree with the free lancing comment. There is no emphasis on defense. This is a team that will get some good wins because they will shoot well (just like last year) and lose a lot of winnable games because they are not a team that emphasizes much els
Exactly. I'm also glad to see that some are starting to realize that LSU's "short guards" weren't the problem on defense last year. It's a systemic problem for this coaching staff. Jones can say all he wants, but the on court play shows there is very little emphasis on the defensive side of the ball. Far too often LSU looks like an AAU team on the court with no discernible plan of attack. To his credit Jones will adjust "in game", but it is adjusting to fix the same deficiencies that happen game after game.
I thought tha addition of Musselman would bring more emphasis on structure and execution, so far it hasn't. Yes, it's just game 3. But it is unsettling to see the same issues last year start to plague this team already this year.

This team looks like they are just five guys free lancing 80% of the time
Think about it the apple don't fall far from the Dale Brown tree.

I agree he's not a great coach and he's proven that

I have zero faith in Alleva to find any coach for any of our athletic teams.
Beth Torina has turned out to be a great hire. Alleva may have many more question marks than answers but so far she has been exceptional.

That was exactly the reason Coach Jones hired Coach Musselman, wasn't it? Still hoping that very soon Coach Jones will be able to fully utilize Coach Musselman's expertise & experiences for the team. With the talents we have, we should expect a much more competitive and fun to watch team!

Seems to be the theme at LSU for all major sports

Not a great coach; not horrible. Master recruiter. He'll be fine...just needs to tell his team about "shot selection" and 1 (us) on 4 (them ) fast breaks are a bad idea.

I agree Alt. I always thought that to be a rationalization. If one really paid attention last year the defensive issues were much deeper.

I agree here as well. I'm no Dale guy by a long shot, but he would let his assistants have a lot of say. Johnny is much more hands on. From what I see early, it's much of the same. To this point I don't see much of a sign of Musselmana's imprint.

"JJ is a mediocre coach"
go get Trent Johnson then lol. He is an excellent coach.
But seriously, people who say this about JJ without knowing him personally or knowing his players personally really can't gauge this.
Some coaches' strength isn't recruiting or x's and o's.
Its called player development, and these coaches do a good job of getting their players to respect the game by becoming a life-long learnesr of it, another- they sell the players on the fact that they need to practice the nuances of the craft more than anyone you plan to ever defeat.
If you have a team that is not the most physically most gifted team in the nation, nor the most talented, then how could they expect to win?
Practice hard?
No, all the great programs have great coaches who work the hell out of their players, pretty much to their physical limits.
The answer is simple. got to out-work em. You have to develop outside of practice too. Keeping the mind and body right, practicing the fundamentals religiously (to the extent that you dont seem sane)
Im hoping Trent has a vision and can really develop our complimentary players who will be here for several years like Tim Quarterman

quote:The talent is not playing well. Coaching always has something to do with it but the players have to do what they are capable of also. So far they aren't and judging by their shooting they aren't great or even very good talent.
We have way too much talent to lose to a team like ODU.
So far this season:
Jarrel Martin 43.2% shooting 1-11 on 3's
Tim Quarterman 35.3% 3-11 on 3's
Keith Hornsby 42.9% 8-19 on 3's
Jordan Mickey 60.6% Yes he is doing good. But he decided to take two 3's and missed both. Why is he shooting 3's? Do you think Jones tells him to?
Josh Gray 44.8% 2-5 3's Gray has been very unselfish so far and is trying very hard to set everyone else up. But when I see he has only taken 5 three point shots and Martin and Quarterman 11 each then that needs to change.
So do we have great talent? No not really. Do we have good talent, yes. Are they going to lose some games, especially in the early going, yes. Do we know whether they are a tournament team and will do well in SEC? Could go either way. Time will tell.

The one silver lining to this point. He has improved dramatically on both ends of the court.
I think the staff pumped him up a bit too much coming in last year and I think he was a part of that too tooting his own horn. Sometimes humble pie can be a good thing. Looks like it was for Q.
