I've never hunted on public land, is there a permit I need to buy to hunt there, will my lifetime license cover that or is it separate? What are the rules for wmas? The regs seemed kinda sparse on info.

Don't know all the rules, but I know the lifetime license is all you need other than federal duck stamp.

There are a lot of rules, rule #1) is you have to fill out a card when you enter and leave the property. There are check stations listed on the WMA map showing the locations.

Yep, you're good.

Find a check in station. You get a card and tear off a piece to put in the box when you arrive. Leave the other face up on your dash so they can match the numbers of the hunters with their vehicles if necessary. When you are done, fill out a quick survey on the back about your activities like what you hunted and what you bagged. Turn that into the same spot as you checked in to complete the check out process.

It's "self clearing" so odds are there won't be anyone present like a game warden. Although they can and do check at the stations as people leave...

You do need one to hunt a wma if you don't have a lifetime license

Ok, so I'm good with my lifetime license. What's the deal with leaving stands out there? Is that a no no or what?

Yes. You are not soppose to leave a stand on wma. I really don't know if that law is enforced.

not supposed to leave anything there overnight...but I don't think they enforce that rule too much...the bigger danger would be either some a-hole sitting it it when you arrive or someone stealing it from you...

the biggest problem with hunting public property is not the rules but the other folks that hunt there...

That's what I'm worried about. I've hunted private property all my life. I don't want some asshat stealing my stuff.

If you go to the harder to get to places it should be fine for overnight. Wouldn't leave it longer than a day or two

It's a $250 ticket for leaving your stand on the tree. My cousin got one. Also, someone said you leave half the card on your dashboard. That's either wrong or it's different between wma's. The wma I hunt requires that you have the checkout portion of the card on you at all times, filled out with what you're doing and if you circle hunting, what you're hunting. If you plan on going back, take your stand off the tree and hide it in a nearby tree top.
