We were discussing history. We were not discussing faith or arguing for the superiority of one religion over another. We were discussing the role of the Enlightenment versus the role of Christianity in giving the West the values of human dignity and freedom. No Scripture was shared. No assertion that Christianity was true was even put forward.

If you cannot have a discussion on the role of religion in shaping human values, then you need to shut down the Political Talk board entirely. Religion and politics are intertwined in all human societies. It is possible to have a discussion about those things that is challenging but that is also respectful in large part.

lsutothetop made a good point that I was about to give him credit for. Roger Klarvin and I were disagreeing, but we were being respectful about it even while telling each other that we thought the other was wrong.

I don't understand why the thread was whacked and if you are saying that we cannot discuss religion at all, even from a historical perspective, then perhaps the mods need to explain to us exactly what your perspective is here, because it differs greatly from what is accepted in most university settings and puts a lot of significant discussions about history and the development of political thought beyond our reach.

The OP was fine. It was a news story. But the thread quickly turned into 3 pages of theology, which is currently not allowed on td.com.

It was history, not theology. There is a difference. I think it was an overreaction.
