LSU is a university first, not a psuedo professional sports conglomerate. If people cared as much about how poorly our state's flagship school is funded as they do about the head coach of the school football team, then LSU would be ranked among the best national public universities in the country like UT, UCLA, and UVA--universities that are well rounded with academic prestige and athletic success.

I'm happy that LSU is now considered a "national (football team) program" that recruits across the country, but as a academically we're not there yet. LSU is more of a above average regional school. Yes, the football program can help garner attention for the school as Georgetown's Basketball program did for there school under John Thompson, but if the academics programs are not well funded, professors aren't paid enough to attract more talent, buildings in disrepair, then the entire University won't benefit as they should from a successful football program.

This has to be a troll. LSU athletics isnt hurting the school in any way and is giving back to the school. You can't expect people to get pumped up and post on message boards about academic programs. This is honestly a ridiculous post IMO.

O, and I'm not some dweeb who hates football. I like, plenty of hacks here, played HS football, linebacker, and captained my team.

I just want to see more balance at LSU. This starts with better state funding. Louisiana shouldn't have two large university systems (the UL system and the LSU system). Every town having its own college dilutes the funding available for the other colleges. Most states overwhelming fund their best university and give smaller amounts to a satellite campus here or there. This is a much better model than the diluted system we have now.

I'm sick of applying for jobs and seeing that the company I'm applying for recruits at other SEC schools Georgia, Florida, and Vanderbilt, but not here.
It doesn't have to be that way if we straighten up the system here. Channel the funds correctly.

What did you study/what are you doing for work?

I know for a fact LSU is heavily recruited in oil and gas. Don't know jack about any other areas.

Maybe your concerns should be directed at a certain academic department and not the university as a whole?

The University has it's strengths in business and engineering but it is not strong enough. Many other majors are way behind.

We need a well rounded university. Not one or two strong-ish regionally type programs. Not everyone wants to be an engineer in Houston or an auditor in Houston.

Look at message board for schools like Michigan, UVA, et al. Sure, they're primarily sports boards, but they're justifiably proud of the academic programs, and support them. Many LSU fans are indifferent, if not openly disdainful of academics. The governor and legislature wouldn't be able to get away with the crap they pull wrt higher education if LSU fans actually cared about the non-sports side of the University.

Not with Jindal in office.

He has effectively eviscerated higher education in this state.

This. I get the impression a lot of people think the highest aspiration one can have in life is to work in some high rise in downtown Houston and live in a subdivision in Katy. There's a big world out there, and so many career paths that are a hell of a lot more important and interesting than that. LSU grads should be doing some of them.

Exactly.

We are setting the bar too low.

We get what we deserve and demand. The people of Louisiana are stupid enough to elect leaders who think it's a good idea to stretch the limited resources of a small state to fund 11 public 4-year universities, cut funding to education first whenever there's a budget problem, appoint dumbass politicos instead of competent administrators to run the university, and generally frick things up across the board.

And then we're surprised when they do exactly what anyone with a brain would have told us they would do before we elected them. Typical stupidity. Louisiana deserves the shitshow that we have for a state and university.

Unlike nearly all universities, LSU's athletics recieve ZERO state funding and turn a profit, which is rolled into the University's budget. Yes, athletics actually makes the university money! The University does not (fiscally) support the athletics, athletics supports the university.

This is great but I think you are missing the point. The emphasis is in the wrong place.

If we want to talk about profit though. You can make much more by growing an endowment with a successful alumni base. That's serious money. Lot's of ZEROs. And because they are donations there is no expense cutting into it like the tiger stadium electric bill or whatever expenses you can think of that the athletic department deals with.

University first, Athletics second.
