Why has the term 'Jingoism' fallen out of use?

When I walked onto the campus of Centenary during the Vietnam War, I kept reading campus newspaper debates and jingoism was a common charge from the left.

Since 1980 I have never seen the word in speech nor in print. Do any of you old timers remember the term?

Nationalism, anti-multiculturalism, anti-world govt? Ya got me. There was another term we used called WOMP back the 60s.

World Order Model Project. It was pretty simple. World govt = no nations. No nations = no wars since if there is not another nation to fight you cannot have war. Ultimate and permanent peace.

Neo-con is the new term for this IMHO. Not the same thing but its an attempt at a smear.

Because xenophobic hegemony sounds more ominous? But I have heard jingoism used during the Bush admin.

The Brits still use it, I think.

During the summer, some reporters over there were mad that Rickie Fowler had an American flag hair cut for the Ryder Cup.

Called the haircut "Thuggish Jingoism"

Yeah, I can see that. In terms of language abuse my biggest pet peeve is 'fascist'. It means whatever you want it to mean.

Jingoism is now used only by Rolling Stone and/or movie critics in reviewing movies relating to war.

I would tend to agree fascist is over-played but it really means something pretty specific. They probably mean tyrant when they use it.

Communist is the same thing. Its pretty specific on what it means but people toss it around - socialist is the appropriate term.

But that includes all forms of what we called 'Toto' back in the 80s. Not the dog in Wizard of Oz. Short for Totalitarianism. It included:
Monarchy
Dictatorship
Communism
Socialism
Nazism
Home Owner's Associations

Thanks. That is exactly the same kind of rhetoric and political cartoons I remember from the 60s. The language is mindless and lacks conciseness.

The cartoons remind me of this:

Zach,

I am pretty sure the left (and others) continued to use the term pretty steadily throug the Iraq War. Toby Keith's (can't recall title) about our response to 9/11 was often derided as "jingoistic." I agree that you don't hear the term as much lately but I suspect that a Democratic president is less likely to be described as "jingoistic" as those on the left are more likely to levy that critique.
