Results don't matter, only the intentions count.

"It’s going to put about 1,000 people to work building a state-of-the-art facility. And when it’s complete, it will turn sunlight into the energy that will power up to 140,000 homes,” Obama said of Ivanpah in a weekly address in Oct. 2010 .
President Obama was too quick to tout the benefits of the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System, and its expected electrical generating output. According to the Energy Information Administration, from January through August 2014, its three units generated 254,263 megawatt-hours of electricity, which is about one-quarter of the annual 1 million-plus megawatt-hours that had been anticipated for the plant, allegedly due to fewer sunny days than predicted. Its owners are now requesting a $539 million federal grant to help pay off part of a $1.6 billion federal loan it received to build the plant.

The 392-megawatt Ivanpah plant started commercial operation at the end of December 2013, and for the first eight months of 2014, it generated just 254,263 megawatt-hours of electricity—about one-fourth of the anticipated level.
quote:
The plant has been criticized for causing the death of between 1,000 and 28,000 birds per year .
quote:
They’re asking for a government handout to cover the payment they must make on a government loan. Adding to the plant’s woes is a request to use 60 percent more natural gas in auxiliary boilers than was allowed under the plant’s certification that was restricted to 5 percent of the total annual heat input from the sun.

Kind of like the Iraq War?

I hope you didn't injure yourself with that stretch.

Ivanpah’s $1.6 billion federal loan came through the Department of Energy’s 1705 loan guarantee program and helped finance the plant’s construction, which began in 2010. Google also invested $168 million in the project. The DOE loan program was intended for technologies that were well past the pilot project stage, but that still needed to demonstrate full-scale commercialization
Oops. 40% below target and in debt, I guess full-scale commercialization still not realized.
Obama - surpassing idiocy target by 40%.

You're right. Trillions of dollars is nothing compared with mere hundreds of millions.

Again - serious question: do you apply this analysis writ large to the Iraq War? Would you say "oops" applies there as well? Was "full-scale" democratization realized?

Photovoltaics are cheap as balls, why are we sinking money into solar thermal?

Grow up and stop playing the "look at what your party did" game.

I don't have a party. It's just amazing how much outrage can be generated over effectively a drop in the bucket yet ZERO outrage over a multi-trillion dollar, generational screw up. If you take a step back you'll see I'm not the one clinging to a party here.

Deflect much?
I'm all for eliminating waste, but why don't we focus on the things that are literally thousands of times bigger and more destructive? I guess we'd rather wave little flags and get teary-eyed over crippled veterans returning home than actually asking any hard questions.

That does not mean that we should now downplay or ignore every other instance of government waste.

I have criticized the wars numerous times.
This thread isn't really about that.

Right. But let's summarize the OP:
"Federal politician promises some economic benefit based on government spending/lending".
Talk about run of the mill.

I am completely with you. We should cut the entire federal budget by at least 10% across the board each year until the budget is balanced. Then we need a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution to make sure we never get into this mess again.

bullshite pie in the sky technology touted to fight climate change doesn't work as designed and needs government to prop it up.

This particular solar investment appears to be poor.
However solar investments will be a necessity for our energy future.
