I have an excel file (Quote Log) that is on my server at work.
Anytime someone needs a quote, we fill out a line and save.
If i try to override the original name, it will save from my computer only.
If anyone else tries to override the original file, they get the error below
this is being shared by about 10 users

how complex is this spreadsheet?
fwiw, i convert most non-confidential spreadsheets to a google doc because the collaboration is AMAZING and you can still keep them secure by only sharing them with select email addresses.

Not complex at all
I've considered Google docs but some employees are old and don't have Google email, is that necessary ?

You can setup everyone with a work only google account. It comes with gmail, but you don't need to use it.
Another option that I've tried and really like is Zoho Docs.

What do you mean work only Google account?
Would they have to log on to gmail or could they use their work email ?

I don't see an actual question, but if I understand correctly you want the 10 users to be able to modify the original file on the server, right? If so, there's a huge problem with this type of simple file sharing, which happens when two people open the file at the same time. If they both open a file with 100 entries, and they each add the 101st entry, only the entry made by the second person to save it will be recorded and the first 101st entry will be lost. This is why people are suggesting tools designed for collaborative document editing.

+1 on the google docs sharing.
It's awesome.
If anyone knows something similar that is non-google, please share it here.

Excel has a feature called sharing that might be what you are looking for. I personally don't like to use excel to store data. That's what databases are for

MS Sharepoint does this.
Typically when you open a server file it will give you the option to open read only if another user has it open. But you can also "share" the file and excel will handle it, but from the documents I've used it on, it's quite cumbersome and causes significant delay in opening (it was a large file).

There's a simpler solution.
Open the excel file and enable sharing. I think it's something like "allow changes by more than one user at the same time."
Save. You're welcome.

I think sharing in Excel is a 2013 feature. Works pretty well. Not sure if the Mac version can participate. Macs are stupid anyway.

I used Office 2010 when I originally turned it into a shared workbook and now days I use a Mac to edit them.
