Anyone ever been here? I know it's supposed to be "cool," but it's also tiny and probably full of the worst kind of hipsters. I have some friends that live out in western New Mexico, and they invited me to meet them in the middle in Marfa for New Years Eve. Can't imagine there's much going on, but I'm considering it. Just wanted to get more information if anyone knows anything about it.

Good for a drive-by. Maybe Lunch. That's it.

I'd go if I could smoke Peyote. Otherwise I don't see much reason to go to the middle of no where.

I've been thru it decades ago - don't remember anything at all special there.

It is famous for some mysterious lights that appear on a hill. Lots of people go there looking for ghosts etc.

It may have parlayed that attraction into some sort of tourist trap - but I wouldn't want to associate with a bunch of ghost chasers.

The Marfa Lights are kinda cool, but that's pretty much about it for that town. You can drive up to Fort Davis for the Texas Star Party once a year, which is a great event.

If you love small-town artsy stuff then you might find something there but if you don't there isn't much else to the place. A great example of a town where a bunch of artists who love what they do get together with other artists who love the same stuff, only to discover that most people aren't willing to pay to travel to a small town four hours from anywhere significant to buy their art.

But if you're just visiting it's kinda cool though.

Lived there in 2006 for a few months. Very very small town. Not much goes on there.
No nightlife. There are some hipster people that live there. Which for that area is different.
Imagine traveling 12-13 hrs to mamou to celebrate New Years eve. That's marfa.
Alpine is nicer.

I heard it's the place where folks who can't stand what Austin has turned into move to get away from it all. Man.

If you're won't to call people hipsters for being a little different, then Marfa ain't really your scene. Ya dig?

Thanks y'all. Anywhere else between LA and NM (don't want to do Houston, DFW, or Austin) that may be decent for New Years Eve? Don't need anything mind-blowing, mostly a place to meet up and see friends.

That's correct, and every local establishment reminds visitors of this with posters and such.

Although Giant was a great movie it was produced in 1956. It's a great story about how people got ahead 60 years ago and worth watching, but Marfa itself is a sad derelict.
