Federal drug agents conducted surprise inspections of National Football League team medical staffs on Sunday as part of an ongoing investigation into prescription drug abuse in the league. The inspections, which entailed bag searches and questioning of team doctors by Drug Enforcement Administration agents in cooperation with the Transportation Security Administration, were based on the suspicion that NFL teams dispense drugs illegally to keep players on the field in violation of the Controlled Substances Act, according to a senior law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation.

The medical staffs were part of travel parties whose teams were playing at stadiums across the country. They included the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who played the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field, and the San Francisco 49ers, who played the New York Giants in New Jersey. DEA officials were expected to inspect six teams in all on Sunday.

The DEA had reason to look at those teams in particular, but the investigation is not restricted to them, according to the law enforcement official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the probe is ongoing. The official said the investigation focuses on practices across the 32-team league, including possible distribution of drugs without prescriptions or labels, and the dispensing of drugs by trainers rather than physicians.

Retired NFL players screwing over current NFL players

quote:

DEA spokesman Rusty Payne confirmed the existence of the investigation and said it was triggered by a class-action lawsuit filed in federal court in May by more than 1,300 retired NFL players. In the suit, they allege that NFL medical staffs regularly violate federal and state laws in plying their teams with powerful addictive narcotics such as Percocet and Percodan, sleeping pills such as Ambien, and the non-addictive painkiller Toradol to help them play through injuries on game days.

This seems like it could potentially be an easy way to get some people in a lot of trouble

quote:

Federal law prohibits anyone but a physician or nurse practioner from distributing prescription drugs, and they must meet myriad regulations for acquiring, storing, labeling and transporting them. It is also illegal for a physican to distribute prescription drugs outside of his geographic area of practice. And it is illegal for trainers to dispense, or even handle, controlled substances in any way.

Justification:

quote:

“The DEA has a responsibility under the Controlled Substances Act to ensure that registrants who possess, prescribe and dispense control substances are following the law,” Payne said. He characterized the DEA actions on Sunday as “administrative” in nature, aimed at discerning whether NFL medical staffs adhere to federal regulations governing the dispensing of controlled substances across state lines. He would not speculate on any future action the DEA might take based on what it found. Penalties can range from suspension or revocation of licenses, civil fines or prosecution.

Most team's travel with a team doctor/physician so they can cover a lot of these laws(though I'm sure trainers still administer these drugs), but I assume there will be a ton of teams that violate the regulations listed above.

Could get nasty though, I can easily see this being a huge issue.

I wonder how you treat the players getting the injections? I'd be willing to be most of these guys aren't exactly pharmacology majors.

The NFL probably saw this coming.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was league policy for the home team docs to have the restricted drugs and they handle the distribution as needed. Or something along those lines.

What about all the crack that they smoke in the locker rooms, like on that show?

ESPN picked up on it

I kind of think this is a big deal. If the DEA says Drs can't administer drugs outside of the jurisdiction, do teams now need to hire a doctor in each town they go to? You know most players have some sort of pain injection, especially this late into the season.

BUMP, just saw the story on the news, and like you said, I think it's a pretty big deal.

I'm not knowledgeable about the rules and regulations these teams have dealing with the prescription or administering of drugs, but I'd guess at least a few of them are pretty lax with their practices. Football is a demanding sport, and sports aren't exactly the golden standard of perfect rule following. Tons of stuff goes on that walk the fine line of ethical behavior.

I'm pretty sure the doctors and trainers, when I was shitting the bed in the Minors, didn't really care what you took or who gave it to you. They'd give a little speech about knowing what's legal at the beginning of the season but we were pretty much on our own. Some of the head medical guys were even openly pro steroid use, wanting it to be legal and administered by the teams(with research and care, I guess).

Kinda surprised nobody was arrested
