Update-Jan 5, 2015.
Went out shooting again Saturday night. Tried a few different locations. The pictures below are taken from atop Skyline Drive in Eagle River just outside of Anchorage. The timelapse was my first attempt at it with my new GoPro Hero 4 Silver. It was shot on a frozen lake here on base. Enjoy.
Just a few
Short Timelapse. Watch in 1080p
These are just a few of the hundreds I shot. I'm still new to this so hopefully I can continue to update this thread during my next two years here and the quality of work increases.
Bonus
A few ice fishing photos from the morning before.

Just wanted to share a few pics I took last night. They're not perfect as I literally got the camera yesterday. Still have so much to learn. But the pics were taken 5 minutes away from my house here on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage.
I've been in AK for a year now and hadn't went out to see the lights yet. Went with a few friends to a mountain top in Eagle River and it was amazing. So amazing that when I got home I couldn't help but pickup the new camera and head back out. Like I mentioned earlier, I took these 5 minutes from my house.
Hope you enjoy and maybe it'll convince you to come up and knock it off your bucketlist.
The weekend forecast for the lights is great and they're supposed to be even brighter tonight. Definitely going to pick up a tri-pod for the camera and go back out tonight. Will share!

Thanks! These were taken with a Nikon D5200. Still have much to learn to get the most out of this thing. Picking up a tri-pod today and am currently looking into the timelapse settings. Gonna go back out tonight (to a much darker location) and get more photos and attempt a timelapse!

Don't you live up there now? Stupid question but how do you like it up there? You miss anything at all in LA?

whenever I have any youngish good looking flight attendants that's a sure way to get them to come up and sit in my lap for a while

I work here. Still have my place in Nola. Commute regularly. Alaska is amazing. Such a beautiful country. Don't miss La because I'm still there 3-4 months of the year.

I remember back in 1986 being 16 years old, living in Ketchikan, Alaska, smoking a bowl of Matanuska Thunderfrick and laying on the hood of my buddy's '77 El Camino staring up at the Auroras all night stoned out of our minds. Still miss those days.
