No pleasing some people - Fast Food "targets" black kids - study says

Yahoo.com story
:blacksessed:
Okay - seriously - there's just no pleasing some people. If they were ignoring black kids - they'd be wrong. If they were excluding black kids - they'd be wrong. So, "targeting" (accurate, but an obviously charged term) black kids is also wrong?
So when Harvard "targets" black kids, is that also wrong? When Wal-Mart "targets" black customers or "targets" black prospective employees - is that also wrong?
:veryveryconfused:

In fairness, they also said they are "targeting" rural and middle income communities.
Seems like they don't want ANY kids "targeted" and are simply pointing out which groups are getting the most attention.
You can debate about what, if anything, should be done but the conclusions seem relatively innocuous.

They have a Kid's Menu - what kind of capitalism is that? -
"We have a child-themed product, but we're not supposed to 'target' them."
I don't get it. They didn't teach this in Civics or Economics when I was in school.

This really isn't a surprise. Fast food is entirely marketed to the poorer and less well off demographics that really don't give a shite about health and only have a few bucks to crack. It's a business model that works for the companies.

Relax, Milton. I'm just telling you that your original interpretation of the article had some important omissions.
Trust me, nobody is going to stop McDonald's from slinging their garbage to the kiddies anytime soon so both of our tax dollars will be paying to unclog arteries of people that made poor decisions for decades to come.
Capitalism wins again.

The implication seemed fairly clear, though. I guess the authors would prefer the fast food target rich white folks, and there would be separate restaurants, serving only healthy, Michelle O. approved lunches to minorities - I'm sure they would be "equally" as attractive as the traditional fast food options, too.

I guess you can take issue with the matriarchal tone of the report (or maybe how the article phrases it) which definitely exists but it seems like they're taking issue with it being marketed to a large swath of kids and not just a single group.
Seeing as the article also notes obesity rates in the extreme youth dropping, I wouldn't expect the study to get much traction.

Let's just all pray that they never do a story on Popeyes!

Well, aren't you a fat little ball of hate tonight.
Targeting a demographic with marketing is not racism you fricking idiot.

Of course it isn't. THere is no more racism. How is that hateful for me to state?
You must be a miserable person.

Keep grabbing for that straw man. Is targeting females in candle commercials sexist? Targeting old men in vacation home ads age discrimination?
I am quite happy, but thanks for your interest. Your posts show you are otherwise. Snarky aren't we?

I can't read the OP. I installed an extension on my browser in 2008 that filtered out anything that wasn't post racial.

"Candle commercials" - never seen one.
If you want to see sexist stereotypes - commercials are a great place to start. It cuts both ways. Ever notice there seems to be a lot of bumbling idiot husbands/boyfriends in commercials?

I wasn't really interested.

Nah, it's just another study showing that EVERYONE else is to blame for the affected persons' problems.
"These places shouldn't market to me or my kids because we're too stupid to make the determination of whether to go there or not." "I weigh 300 lbs because Burger King MADE me eat 5000 calories a day even though I really didn't want to"

What a stupid article.

Fast food is toxic waste to everyone.

Lets assume I would agree with you, in general - but the OP focused on this notion that there is somehow, this "disproportionate targeting" of black kids by the fast food chains.
So what? They want customers - all money is green, etc. From the headline on, it felt like I was reading a social justice piece - akin to saying, "Now they're coming for our children."
What if the evidence showed the opposite - that they didn't want the business of black kids? Somebody would be pissed about that (probably rightly so). Again, there's just no pleasing some people.

Eddie Murphy's welfare burger routine comes to mind.
