Not content with just being a "hater" of Louisiana's Republican Governor, Lee Zurik also turns his reporting to some NOLA community organizers.

quote:

A non-profit that owes the Internal Revenue Service more than $1 million is spending money on pricey meals, trips and even gas. That non-profit, Alternatives Living, Inc., gets all of its money from the state and is paid to take care of the disabled and homeless.

quote:

Taxpayers actually fund this non-profit. Alternatives Living operates out of an office on Magnolia Street in uptown New Orleans. They receive grants from the federal government. In 2012, those grants totaled $2,824,726. Their mission is to take care of the disabled and homeless.

But Lynch says the officers have also been using the non-profit's money to take care of themselves. “Apparently it's been misappropriated, used for lavish expenses and personal expenditures,” he says.

We reviewed four years' worth of credit card statements. In that time, they spent $31,501.97 on food, dining at some of the area's top restaurants. That included a $567 meal at Muriel's and $528 on a Sunday at Stella. One Friday, they charged the non-profit $521 dollars at NOLA Restaurant and, on another Friday, $421 at Commander's Palace. And In January of this year, they had another $400 meal at Commander's.

quote:

Along with the meals, the officers charged $31,923.86 in tickets and entertainment. That ranged from Cirque de Soleil to the Legends of Hip Hop. And in four years, they spent $23,299.66 on Hornets tickets.
And the officers spent $19,000 travel. That included charges at hotels in Miami and Las Vegas, flights to Orlando, and even several charges with cruise lines.

Yeah, that would be the only thing; but they didn't bring that up in the article.

As for the cruise line charges, Roberson says, “I don't recall putting any cruises on the credit card that I can remember. However, when we were on vacation, like I said, we may have charges for Internet access and stuff like that - and if we were talking, maybe a meal or something like that.”

We found $4,007.12 of charges related to cruises - for the Carnival Conquest, Carnival Liberty, the Atlantis, Royal Caribbean and even cruise parking - all paid on the non-profit's credit cards.

“We used the credit card for the incidentals,” Ada Craige-Roberson says, “and they're personal charges that came along with Internet access and whatever else we did, drinks....Tips would have gone on there, and tips are automatically charged, I can tell you that. If we went to dinner, like on the cruise, it would have been there. Sometimes I booked the excursions separately. But if they were booked onboard and we did an excursion, it was on there.”

Dude needs to stop talking.

There's one.

That kind of stuff and every government department in the world tells you they are strapped for cash?

This is a $2M non-profit that does nothing but employee the owners and their family.

It's unbelievable that this stuff exists.

Guarantee there's 100 more just like it.

I don't think there is a republican or democrat that doesn't feel like these people belong in jail for a long time. This is blatant stealing from the tax payers. As a landlord this would be like me finding out a pipe busted at my tenants place so I fly to Home Depot in Las Vegas, stay at the Bellagio for a week, eat at 5 star restaurants and then come home and fix it and try to write it all off! Even worse because they are doing it all with tax payer money.

They did themselves no favors going on camera, they are extremely dumb and were very unprepared.

$20K a year in suspect charges on a $3M budget is not the worse I've ever seen.

Who was at those meals?
Who went to the Hornets games?
Why did they travel to Vegas and Orlando?
and who went on the cruises? LOL! CRUISES!!!!!

Who the hell am I kidding? Throw the book at these idiots.

Fundraising? To get Federal grants they need to spend lavish money on who exactly?

If it is fundraising it is additionally corruption of federal officials.

Not really sure what makes them a "Democrat ally".

My wife works with these guys sometimes and when I told her the news in the OP she wasn't surprised at all. Says with a couple of exceptions their case workers suck and she's had to make several complaints to their supervisors. "Charities" like this do far more harm than just the money they've wasted, its good they've been busted.

Yeah. Exactly. Like I said, the only reason a charity would need to go out to eat at Muriel's is fund raising - and I doubt very much that's what was going on.

Surprisingly they were conservative with tips, averaging $10 per $500 meal.

Ok, I just read the whole article. These three fricking crooks all deserve to go to jail for a long time!

They also told us their expertise is in taking care of the homeless and disabled, and running a business was new to them - records show the non-profit has been in business since 1993.

There are tons of non-profits with higher operating budgets that 2.8 mil. That might be enough for ~50 case workers or so. The issue isn't their size, the issue is they were wasting money and perhaps even committing criminal acts in doing so.

My guess is 95% of the non-prof makes salaries typical for their position and locality and the guys on top are pilfering it for themselves. That's generally how these things go down.

To be fair they probably meant that they themselves personally were new to management. Of course that excuse doesn't count for shite as its obvious the money isn't for them to eat at New Orlean's finest restaurants.

Or at all, really. The last time my wife's non-prof bought a meal for her or anyone else above or below her - other than per diem for a once a year conference in BR - was never. Her employees sometimes get a free meal, but its on our dime!

Shouldn't these "officers" salaries be public knowledge since they are a NP? They appear to be nothing but professional con artists to me.
