Next school year, Clemson University may turn to its student body to help pay for its sports teams.
Clemson may begin to charge students a $350-per-year athletic fee beginning next school year to supplement its athletic department budget against an expected rise in the costs to remain competitive in intercollegiate sports, said Lambert McCarty, chair of Clemson's Athletic Council.
The council acts as a liaison between the school's academic and athletic departments.
Clemson is the only public school in the Atlantic Coast Conference or Southeastern Conference that doesn't charge an athletic fee for students or charge them for tickets to sporting events, said Joe Galbraith, assistant athletic director for communications.
Athletic Director Dan Radakovich discussed the fee at the Athletic Council's October meeting, but it hasn't yet been proposed to the school's Board of Trustees, who would have to approve it, McCarty said.
The student fee would raise $6 million-$6.5 million per year once it's fully in place, McCarty said. That would add to the athletic department's $72 million per-year budget.

Let's don't cut any of the fat from the departments, let's raise taxes instead.

350 a year???
As in 175 a semester??

Like that's going to change anything. That's one night out on the town to these kids

why not just start charging for sporting events? I mean, I know they want to make as much money as possible, but it seems like charging for sporting events that people actually attend would be a little more "fair" than charging little timmy wong $350 for something he doesn't care about.

Meh, there are a ton of fees involved in your cost of attending a university, and several go to things about which you don't give a shite.

I would think that doing it this way would bring in more revenues since you're assessing the fee on all students and not just the ones who go to the games.

well yeah obviously, I acknowledged that. Just seems kinda crappy. Actually I'm more in shock that sporting events are free to all students. That's their first mistake.

That was my thought as well. Why charge the students who don't give a crap about sports $350? We paid an activity fee at SC (this was only a few years ago), but I don't think it was anywhere near $350.
I guess you could argue that the athletics programs are bringing in money that help the entire university, therefore all students should pay?

I understand the argument and don't disagree....but it's similar to income taxes. Everyone pays them (or they're at least supposed to) but a much smaller percentage of the population directly use services the money funds.

i'm perfectly ok with this if this remains to be the case. if you're gonna charge the $350, then granting students free admission is the least they could do. i say this at a former athlete student... i don't think admission was charged for anything short of sec's or ncaa's for my sport. i could be wrong on that. i know uf wasn't charging last november when i saw bama come to town.

LSU doesn't charge an athletic fee but does charge a small amount for football tickets
All other sports are free

You had a much different college experience than I did

Yeah. As long as student tickets are free I don't see a huge deal.
Although at LSU we got free tickets for everything besides football, so I guess my fee was the $70 I paid a year for football tickets.
Although there are tons of random fees that I didn't utilize in college as well.

That seems kind of high. I know back in the early 90s, I paid $5-$8 a game for LSU football tickets and admission to all the other sports was free for students. I think there was a little fee that was collected for student rec facilities and non-varsity sports.
Clemson just ought to make students pay $10 or so for football tickets and maybe a few bucks for other varsity sports. Like someone said, don't make kids that don't give a hoot about football pay for it. To me, asking students to pay $175 a semester for varsity sports is a lot different than asking them to cough up $25-$50 a semester so they can play flag football or work out at the student rec center.
