To add to all the other sightings, we saw scapes, rubs, mock fighting among young bucks and young bucks chasing does all day Saturday North of Vicksburg. I understand people in Louisiana and Bama are seeing the same things. Old timers seem to believe that this may indicate an early and/or colder than normal winter, and possibly an early rut. What say the Obers?

Don't believe it. We had a cold winter last year with early rut predictions and the rut was later than average.

I got some game cam photos from Southeast MO yesterday that show some smaller bucks chasing each other, but haven't been up there to check for other sign yet.

The rut up there generally runs about 3-4 weeks ahead of the rut in South MS, and for the past 2 years the opening of gun season has preceded the rut up there by about 2 weeks.

I'll report back after this weekend.

My understanding is that it has something to do with the amount of daylight triggering the rut.

This.

And if a doe were to come into heat in July, there'd be a line of dead bucks behind her from chasing in 100 degree weather for days at a time.

UPDATE: Rut is still a couple of weeks away in Southeast MO-putting it 5-6 weeks out in South MS.

I saw some rubs but no scrapes. I also saw a lot of does but no buck chasing or following.

South Arkansas rut is in full swing. lots of chasing two weekends ago. Not much this weekend.... seemed like the big boys may have been in lockdown. ought to be busting back loose later this week...... hope so, I'm off Friday.

I just came back from hunting in North East Arkansas and I can tell you the Rut is in full swing up there already. Lots of scrapes and rubs. Caught 2 good size bucks on camera, walking right by the feeder to go check their scrapes.

my son killed a 6 yr old 200lb 8 pt friday around 5pm. couldnt tell where neck ended and shoulders began. hock glands stunk to high heavens. Never seen a buck in full rut this early in my life in Central Alabama. A fellow youth hunter also killed an 8 pt, but was only 3 yrs old and no sign of rutting... We have a near 1:1 buck doe ratio too so our rut is fairly even and late... ie Jan 20-Feb15 or so...
