Bama got down to the 1 and then received a unsportsmanlike and pushed back to the 16. Why wasn't it first and goal from the 16?

Sry if this has been discussed and I know let it go but I was just curious when thinking about this yesterday

I don't get why people don't understand this. The play happened after a play that resulted in a first down and it was a dead ball penalty. Once the ball was pushed back outside the 10 it was no longer first and goal.

This just shows you the football acumen of most posters. Either they are new fans or just never bothered to learn the rules.

I questioned this like a thousand other people. It doesn't make sense but it is the rule.

It actually makes perfect sense if you know anything about football. A new set of downs had not yet been established.

This is a new rule circa ~9 years ago and a very esoteric one at that. No need to bust fan's balls. I bet there are dozens of rules In the rule book that you are a bit fuzzy on, no?

Cuz what you said does not make sense.

Run a play. Get First and goal at the 1. Dead ball. Personal foul. 15 yard penalty. Should it not be First and goal at 16. This is what he is asking.

ETA: If this is a new rule just say so. But saying "new set of downs had not been established yet" is bullshite. That's the definition of a dead ball.

If that play had occurred at the 11 instead of the 1 yard line, no one would think that it should have been 1st and 15 from the 26. A first down was established as a result of the play regardless of where on the field it took place. I will admit I was also confused because I thought 1st and goal also.

It has been around for at least 5 years IMO. I can't remember when it wasn't the rule

I think the rule change people may be referring to is different and would have made it 1st and 1 from the 16

A new set of downs is not officially set until the ball is set for play. So no, the new set of downs had not been established yet.

It is in fact the rule and was called correctly. I think there should be a provision if it's 1st and goal, but alas they don't let me make the rules. Is what it is.

It makes absolute perfect sense because I am 100% correct.

I know exactly what he is asking and I answered the question. No, it definitely should not be first and goal. The refs were right in this instance. It should have been 1st and 10 at the 16 yard line.

No, it isn't.

Giving the team the first and 10 negates the penalty of 15 yds you just gave them.

Essentially what happened is the team got a first down 9 yards closer than the previous play after getting a 15 yd penalty.

We did not stop the first down after that at any rate.

How the hell does it negate the penalty? It still pushed them back to the fricking 16 yard line instead of having the ball at the 1 yard line. If a RB busts a 40 yard run on 2nd a 3 that results in a first down and there is a holding 30 yards down the field, it is still going to be first and 10 on the next play. It will be 10 yards from the spot of the foul.

And if you think it negates the penalty yardage, then that's just your opinion and I can't help you there. Maybe take it up with the NCAA rules committee because the refs got the call right. It should have been 1st down and 10 yards to go from the 16 yard line.

1st and goal from the one as opposed to first and goal from the 16. That is a penalty being enforced. How is that different from what the refs gave them?
