I have a satellite set up at the camp. My direct tv equipment got recently upgraded to the genie. Can I bring a mini genie to the camp and will it work? Any suggestions? Thanks

No.

The mini genie requires a wifi network that the main genie unit is also connected to.

It's basically a client of the main genie.

He would also have to match the dish to the receiver, correct?

Yes. That is why I still used a old receiver in my bedroom. When I go to the camp or camping, I just bring it along with me.

I just went through this.....

Hope this helps. We upgraded to the HD genie at my house but as stated above it's not portable like the old boxes. So I kept ALL of my old equipment from the dish to boxes and remotes. Then I brought my old equipment to the camp and installed it myself with the old boxes and it works fine. If you still have access to your old equipment or more importantly the cards that went inside of them you are still good bring them down to the camp.

I still have an old box, its just inactive. Do I need to hook it up tonight and reactivate before I leave tomorrow? Thanks

Is it still listed on your account ie are you still paying a monthly fee for that box? If not you will have to call them with the receiver id number and card number to get it activated. If it is one that you are still paying for but haven't used in a while you will have to either call them and get them to ping it or go online and in your account options you can refresh your activations.

I just went through this same deal. Just hook the old box up at home and call DTV and tell them you added a TV in your house and want it activated. One thing I missed is the Genie system doesn't need the HD b-band filter to work, but the old boxes do. So mine didn't work stand alone at the camp until I added the filter.
