Payton/Brees' confidence borders on arrogance, and it just kills the team

This tendency stood out on two plays:

1. The INT to Graham. Saints had TOs left, tried to get cute with the hurry up. You could tell that Brees knew before the ball was snapped that he was going to Graham -- no matter what. Locked in on him from the get-go. It's one thing to try to keep the defense off balance, it's wholly different when you wind up off-kilter yourself.

2. Third-and-1 in OT. Payton's old bugaboo -- his infatuation with passing on 3rd/4th down and short. They previously had several nice throws to an open Stills, who had been invisible most of the game. Again, tried to get cute with the play call. Not only that, Brees again telegraphed the play, and Stills was surrounded by two defenders just yards from the LOS.

As much credit as Payton deserves for sticking with the run during the win streak, he gets the blame for reverting to old habits yesterday. And Brees has developed such bad habits over the past couple of years, it's maddening.

I agree that those were the two defining plays...however, do you think the saints of weeks 1-6 even compete with san fran?

There was a lot to like, and the refs really boned us...you cannot call PI of any kind on that last play

Yes we lost. When a team loses, more often times than not you can look to a head coach and quarterback as the biggest reasons why. Drew had about 5 plays i can smack him for. I only had a problem with maybe 1 or 2 play calls, nothing too much.

Are you saying we didn't stay dedicated to and patient with the run game yesterday? Could not be further from the truth. Don't let ONE 3rd-down play erase the memory of an entire game.

goal line play, we threw to Jimmy for TD. You win some you lose some.

Them running hurry up at the end of halves drives me insane. They never spike it and they never take TO's. Just try to hurry up and run another play. That int was Graham was completely unnecessary and had they just slowed the frick down, spiked it, and regrouped, it's probably a much better drawn up play.

Just glossing over the fact that we came back from a two TD deficit and had a chance to end the game by getting a stop on 4th and 10 that not only was converted, but put SF in field goal range?

It's because they aren't used to having them, they are used to having to burn them to save from getting a delay of game call in the 1st quarter!

The INT to Graham was tough but the breakdown on the 4th and 10 from Kaep to Crabtree is just inexcusable. That was the play of the game.

After the Saints took the lead the first thing I said was "Great, 1:52 left." Sure enough, defense gonna defense.

I don't have too much to say about the playcalling. They did what I have always liked and run the football.

not taking the timeout if you get a play off or spike it really opens up that one next play. You can use the entire field, get down and call the TO for a FG.

Exactly. Some just don't seem to understand that. That's the game right there.

The error was made by not using the timeout. Payton and Brees have made this mistake before. They confuse the ability to go quick from the line with assuming it's always the right thing to do. Anyone with half a brain knew that they weren't getting 3 plays off without calling a timeout. And, with the time running down, Brees knew that was his only play to push it into the end zone...that's where the mistake happened.

I can't complain about the run/pass mix yesterday. I don't think that was the difference in the game at all.

People tend to disregard how many times we get 3rd and 1's with the pass for some reason. Whenever we don't get it it's because Sean is too arrogant to run. I seem to remember a ton of times in 3rd/4th and 1 we've got stuffed running the ball.

Why aren't you bitching about that play when they ran it with colston on 4th and 2 on the td drive in the 4th and it went for about 25 yards?

I have an issue with this statement. Watch how other teams close out halfs with their hurry-ups, IMO the Saints don't have a hurry up. They quickly jog to the line and you can tell SP is still calling the plays. Other teams let the QBs run the plays in hurry up and you can see the O-line and WRs literally running to the LoS.

I think the playcalling was pretty solid. Sticking with the run down 14 against a tough, back to the wall San Fran team was great.

I do think at the end of the half that pushing it with two timeouts was bad decision making.
Brees has got to be better in those situations.

The two minute offense has been a mix of awful and amazing this season. You just cant press that play to Graham. Take the FG, Shane Graham has been pretty solid for the Saints lately.

Again the two minute defense let us down but its much improved. That play is on Cory White. He came off Crabtree for all the world looking like he intended to make a play on Kapernick 45 yards away from him. Stay on your man. Intercept it or bat it down. Game over.

The Saints played a tough game but the little mistakes and mental errors are where the losses are.

They should have had a little more of that confidence and arrogance on that 4th and 2 in niner territory in OT. Should have gone for it.
