If the 4-team playoff format had been in place during the BCS era, there would have been seven years in which at least one 2-loss team would have made it in. Based on this history, I think we'll see 2-loss teams in the playoffs about half the time. Here's the list of 2-loss teams that would have made it in based on the final BCS rankings:

1999
Alabama

2001
Colorado

2002
USC

2003
Michigan

2005
Ohio State

2006
LSU

2007
LSU
Virgina Tech
Oklahoma

Is this based on where they were in the final regular season poll?

Like I don't think in 2005 OSU gets in. Oregon does at 10-1 IMO

2006, not sure LSU gets in. The Vile was 11-1, as was Wisky. If they take "conference champs" an 11-1 Vile may get in

07, yea who knows

It's a good discussion point though for sure

I think UCLA is the only one with a real chance this year. If they can win out and beat Oregon in the Pac Championship, they will have a great resume and be champions of a very good conference. A Texas win over TCU would help them tremendously.

Could maybe go
They would just need 1 of Baylor, Florida State, Ohio State to falter or SEC East win the championship game to give SEC West champion second win.

This is based on the final BCS rankings. Ohio State and LSU finished ranked #4 in 2005 and 2006 respectively.

Yea I think those 2 teams miss out though based on playoff criteria

What criteria are talking about? The Committee isn't bound by any sort of rules. Hell, they could put Marshall in the playoffs if they chose to.

They have said they will put weight on conference champs. In my comment above, a Pac12 and Big East champ likely get in over non champs.

But they've also said they're weighing other things, such as strength of schedule and quality wins. I'll bet the Committee would have put Alabama in the 2011 championship game over conference champion Oklahoma State just like the BCS rankings did.

Okie State I think had an advantage in both those stats in 2011. They may have put Bama in based on the eye test, but Okie State had a better schedule and more wins over good teams

I agree with this. You may recall that the computers preferred Oklahoma State but the humans preferred Alabama, I think largely based on reputation. I think the team from Norman would gotten more respect than the team from Stillwater if they had the same resume.

Lost twice and ASU isn't losing again and will win the south. ASU has Oregon St, Wash St, and Arizona left on their schedule then a date with Oregon in the PAC 12 championship. ASU will win the south.

Pac 12 champ IS going to the playoffs. And UCLA ain't going to be there.

No question. If Mississippi State had been in Bama's position and Texas had been in Okie Lite's position, we would have laid an egg against the sips.

Well ASU is underdog @Arizona. So theres that. And UCLA has the tiebreaker. If all the favorites were to win out for the rest of the season, UCLA would be playing Oregon in the conference championship.
