Has anybody ever received an official letter from the Dept of Edu

Claiming you owe 14k worth of student loans...but you don't?
My wife received a very official looking letter with an address and phone number that Google claims is real. She has never taken out a student loan. She has only had Pell Grants and scholarships.
She called the number, but it was after business hours.
Has anybody else been through this?

Easy answer is to check you and your wife's credit report. You are allowed to check for free once a year. If you see it there, you know it's legit. Or fraud.

If your wife is telling the truth, it is probably a collection scam. They can have a "real" number but that doesn't mean it is not a scam. They could also have misidentified your wife if she has a common name. Delete her personal info and post the letter.

Time to think about heading for Mexico...
Run for it and they'll never get the money your wife owes, but never told you the truth about.

I cannot imagine how hard it would have been to wait until tomorrow, and then call them during business hours.

Scam. I got a call from the "IRS" today. Indian dude with a Indian dude shouting in the background about calendars and parties in a hollow-sounding room They're getting better every year.

If it is a scam, you don't want to call them.

Of course we are going to call tomorrow...geez!
I was simply curious if anybody has heard about this particular scam...

If it is legit, I guarantee you will get another letter. They want you to call. "I won't tell them anything." They know how to get you to talk.
Post the number that is on the letter.

It's a scam. I know several people here in Alabama that received the same letter from the Al. Dept of Edu. The thing is that none of the three people who got these letters ever attended college on a student loan. The three that I'm speaking of, their parents paid for their education using their own funds. The scammers today can make anything look official. Just call the La. Dept of Ed. BTW, don't call the number that is on the letter. Either call the number that is listed on the La. Dept. website. or better yet, if you live in BR, go see them personally.

According to the Google, the number is legit. Sorry.

I know. We Googled it earlier. The letter, though, said she never responded to their earlier letters. This was the first letter that we have received. It claimed her wages would be garnished. The letter was stamped September 5th. It is November 6th...two months later. We have heard or seen nothing.
plus...she never took out a student loan. This very odd!

If she really never had student loans, then the "official" letter (that has the real number on it) could be a scam where they send an official looking letter then try to call you before you call them back.
If the postmark (not the postage meter) is really for September, they may have screwed the scam up.
I got mail today addressed to some woman who has a court hearing in NJ (and I'm in La.).

I failed to add that the letter arrived on Sep 5th...at an old address. We had some old mail accumulating at the old place. They kept it for us.
My point about the postmark is that it is more than two months ago. If they were truly garnishing her wages, shouldn't it have happened already?

It may be nothing more than your wife has the same name as a student loan debtor. Don't give them her full social security number. The last four should suffice. Don't tell them where she works.
