Did you declaw your cat?
The lady is considering rescuing a kitten and we are going over semantics. I'm doing some reading about people saying how declawing will or could affect personalities and attitudes. It is going to be an inside cat, so I'm leaning towards declawing but I understand it is painful and banned in some countries for being inhumane. The kitten is young, so recovery should be quicker and less painful. I had cats in my household growing up but they all had their claws.
Thoughts?
Serious answers preferred.

As a owner of 2 cats, please don't declaw them. They're instinct is to prey on stuff and by removing their claws, you're removing what they were born to do. My cats are outside 80% of the time, so I've never even considered it.

i don't own a cat, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but ripping the cats claws out seems super fricked up

Two indoor cats (Jones') and not a single thing we care about has been scratched.
They have scratching post, their own lounging ottoman, and we keep 349247192 fleece blankies in the living room that we don't mind them kneading on.
Furniture is perfect.
And they are 100% indoor.

If it's indoor then yes, declaw it.

They use better methods now but it's still painful. I never have declawed a cat but if it's the only way cat gets a great home guess it beats alternative.

I was young and dumb when I had my first cat declawed. Never again. I have never felt so bad in all my life.

I actually like cats, but no way I could have them in my house all the time. Ours (my parents') come inside maybe 30 min a day and thats just because they stand by the door and cant wait to get back outside. They just like to come in for short periods to lay on the cold floor

Have two, they are fine.

Like you, I have heard that it is inhumane...however, he is not gonna be in my house tearing shite upp all of the time
when I compare being declawed and living a pretty sweet life to having claws while being euthanized by the animal shelter, declawing doesn't sound inhumane at all...

Declawing is like cutting your finger off at the first knuckle, they literally cut claw off and dig out that bone.

Do not declaw the cat. Simple as that. They need their claws whether they're a house cat or not.

nobody on the IT owns a cat.

Declawed the front paws. That fat bitch stays inside though, so no real loss.

Nope.
They have specific scratching posts and they know they'll get yelled at if they try scratching on the couch.

Lifelong cat owner here. Do not declaw.
If the big worry is about your furniture - You can train your cat out of behaviors. Declawing can lead to depressed personalities... or even worse - debilitating medical conditions even if the operation is done correctly due to variance in physiology.
This is mine...
...and those big feet have claws in 'em.
Wouldn't have her any other way.

We declawed our cat. No personality change. It's sad to see the cat after the operation but you move on. Your furniture doesn't get ripped to shreds and the cat doesn't change.
We went with the laser procedure.

We hear this a lot, but at some point most cats end up outside ( even if by accident) and they need to be able to defend themselves. Front claws are the first line of defense so they pretty much need their claws on all 4 feet.

We declawed my parents cat and he still kills the frick out of stuff no problem. Just the front claws tho.
