It seems the SEAL command is pretty pissed about his coming appearance on Foxnews as well.

I don't think he should do the interview either.

Me either. He must need money. I re-read "The Man Who Shot Bind Laden" is Esquire recently and based on some of the information in that piece, it seems odd that he would come out on this issue.

Dude seems nice enough from the youtube. He's public now; even in the Youtube comments. The US gov't can't protect him, and given his need for notoriety, I hope he has a very large life insurance policy as his daughters may unfortunately come to depend on that one day soon.

Seals stay quiet for life for a reason.

These guys should get $500k per year for the duties they perform.

It's okay for the government and military to promote the actions of military members when it benefits the government or military, but it is not okay for the members to promote their actions for their own benefit. That is a bunch of crap. Why should Presidents who are commanders in chief of the military, and generals, be able to write memoirs and get paid to give speeches if we are going to deny the rank and file members of the military the same opportunities?

This is turning into quite a debate because "The Shooter" from the the Esquire article is now being said to be a liar. He was on the mission but was not the individual who actually killed UBL.

Supply & Demand

I don't think that they should get $500K, but virtually all of these top tier units are below capacity. The demand is certainly there, but the supply is not. This is difficult work that takes a fairly unique set of character traits that not many people have.

With the way warfare is changing, the demand for this kind of work is only going to grow and grow.

The best solution, IMO, is to have a tiered system like the Australians. They have four tiers of combat pay (and it is substantial) based on how close you are to the enemy. Some wag sitting on Bagram for 12 months shouldn't be getting the exact same pay - based on rank - as the poor grunt Private slugging it out in Ramadi or the ODA guys embedded with ANA in the Arghandab (as is currently the case).

Well said. Goes hand in hand with one of my favorite Willie and Joe cartoons from WW II.

In some ways they do. There is the monthly stipend for Hazard Duty Pay when you are in a declared area. Additionally, you don't pay income taxes while you are in a hostile area which means there is approximately 20-25% (didn't look up tax brackets) increase in take home pay during a deployment.

I would be in favor of increasing the hazard duty pay from what it is today assuming its still around $150 per month.

No, they know what they are getting into when they sign up. You don't join the SEALS to be rich and famous, this guy signed a non-disclosure and knowingly violated it.

I respect the hell of him and thank him but he isn't a victim in this situation.

Excuse me Nigel, but isn't that the sound of native war drums along the Limpopo?

This reminds me of the open letter Colin Powell wrote to all officers in 1993 where he said it didn't matter if we had a dope-smoking, draft-dodging womanizer as CinC. We were duty bound to respect the office of the POTUS nonetheless. Whether the man in the office was worthy of respect, or had even a smidgen of honor was totally superfluous.
