There's really no point in putting him on the shortlist because nobody is going to vote for him.

Anybody voting for anyone other than Ronaldo here is legitimately either stupid or being paid to do it.

There are four or five players who could legitimately be voted for.

Ronaldo is an all time great and had an amazing season but you should really broaden your horizons.

You could be right but....for me the man that scored 31 goals in 30 league games (51 in all comps), the most goals in UCL for the 2nd straight year, wins UCL, wins CDR, and lost the league on the last day does it for me. Sure the world cup was a disaster but shite the man dominated every other competition he was in basically. Then we won't even get into what has happened so far in 2014-2015.

I watch pretty much any match that I can and I closely follow La Liga and BPL.

I'm a bit in tune to Bundesliga and they play a little different style, but I mean come on you can't compare anybody in that league to Ronaldo's numbers right?

Like I said you can say world cup and I give you that but to me that is kind of less important....could just be me.

I'm out of tune on French and Italian leagues....except for Zlatan I mean hell who doesn't know that crazy bastard....numbers not equal still though. So yes on that front I'd say I do need to broaden my horizons, but I'm sure you know as well or better than I do the futility of an American trying to watch every single league in Europe.

Numbers just don't tell the whole story in soccer.

How about Philipp Lahm? Captained an all time great Bundesliga team to a record 19 point victory in the league and a +71 goal differential while playing defensive mid for the first time, then captained Germany to a World Cup title playing defensive mid and right back at elite levels in one tournament. There's something to be said about being an integral part of two legendary teams and the captain of both.

Does Ronaldo deserve to win? Yeah, probably but the case for Lahm is very strong in my opinion.

I don't have a problem with Lahm at all. After really looking at the list, my biggest problem is Gotze. He scored the World Cup winning goal, but he was pretty underwhelming in the Bundesliga last year.

Götze probably shouldn't receive a vote because he was injured pretty often and in and out of the lineup.

He's great this year though.

Maybe....but shite the last truly defensive player to win it was Cannavaro in roughly the mid-2000s right? I mean no doubt you could get defense from some of the other guys but I mean it takes a helluva a lot for a defensive guy to win it....although as I recall there was still some rumbling when the Italian won it I think....can't really remember too long ago.

Hell some would consider Xavi and Iniesta two of the top assist men of all time and neither really ever came close.

I'm not taking anything away from Lahm....or any of those Munich guys. What they did in league and then coming out in Brazil like they did was unreal, but I just don't see any of them in the conversation for this thing over Ronaldo.

Ronaldo is flashier and scores goals. I wish the award was given to the best player and not the best attacker.

ETA: Ronaldo was AMAZING the last year but I'm with TN Bhoy on this one. There are other players that it wouldn't be outrageous to vote for.

It kinda sucks but you have to give credit for how Ronaldo seems like he keeps getting better while Messi has kind of plateaued and he's starting to get credit since Messi was winning so much before.

That said, Lahm and Neuer would be pretty deserving (albeit unlikely) IMO.

I know Atletico's success was really built on a solid team effort, but surprised not to see one of their defenders on there like Godin

100%. I'm not a Ronaldo fan, but to say he is undeserving would be foolish. I won't be upset at all if he wins. I would just like to see players at the back get more credit. Guys like Courtois, Godin, Neuer, Lahm put in top drawer performances week in/week out and never really get the respect they deserve (Neuer did at the World Cup).

Apparently at the LFP awards yesterday, not one player from Atletico made the La Liga Best XI.......

I tend to think defenders should get more credit than they do. I don't think Lahm will win. I'm just saying I think he should be in the convo

You take Neuer now or Kahn in his prime?

ETA I ask this simply because Kahn was the only goal keeper to even come close to winning in modern times at lease....and well Ronaldo again
