I don't plan to. Staind played Rock on the Row here several months back and there was so much socializing by the crowd during their acoustic portion, it was deafening.....

modern rock either went total pop or it got heavier
there are tons of really heavy bands that are very successful, they just don't get played on terrestrial radio

He's not wrong. The closest things to a "face of rock" in the U.S. are probably Dave Grohl or Eddie Vetter.

If you want to see Mark Tremonti play in Europe, you do it in a 20,000 seat arena. In America he plays The Hard Rock. Europe has saved metal. Just like they embraced Hendrix first, the Euros know what they are seeing, whereas Americans have no idea. Americans are all about style and trend sadly. Cultural robots. Rock and roll is alive and kicking in Europe. It's being preserved.
Tremonti is completely right. There is no rock and roll BOMBAST left in America. Only Pomp and popular culture bottom-feeders. Rock and roll has basically been driven underground in America. The worst part about it is that kids (under 18) aren't able to see the Mark Tremonti's of the world, so they never really have a chance to become fans or go to authentic, loud , messy rock shows. Everything is so saccharine sweet and poppy.
Pimp Jr (13) went to see Alter Bridge this year and loves Kennedy/Tremonti. The first thing he told me this morning was "Good morning Dad, Jack Bruce died" which gives me some hope for the future (sadly not Jack Bruce's future). But it's pretty sad that he's wearing out Traffic albums and Cream albums because he can't find anything substantive being released today.
Loud, live bands like Monster Truck and Alter Bridge and Rival Sons would have been the most famous bands in America pre-1990. Now they are largely unknown. It's one of the reasons I don't crack on the jam band fanboys-because at least they are preserving the listening experience and the venues. But the vast majority of it is cynical corporate schlock.

'bämbast
noun
1) high-sounding language with little meaning, used to impress people 2) speech or writing that is meant to sound important or impressive but is not sincere or meaningful

Well shite. Bombast was a poor word choice. Alert the media-I have apparently misused a word. Because those bands I listed are the opposite of bombast. I was thinking stacks of Marshall amps and musical prowess, not choreographed stage productions with hair and explosions. These bands are all about grit and authenticity and kicking your arse for two hours.
I stand corrected.
The vast majority of the great bands of yesteryear would be playing 2000 seat venues in today's environment.

There still is great rock being made in America if you're willing to look left of center.

Absolutely. I think that's the point. You have to be an audiophile and you have to really pursue it. You have to travel to faraway venues. But the bands themselves are largely UNSUPPORTED in the US. All these great bands are comparatively starving. Until they go to Europe. Then they can sell out massive shows in Scandinavia, Eastern Europe etc. That's where the rock and roll vitality is. It used to be here.

Who are these great bands?
