I wrap the meat in a towel before putting it in the chest. The towel smells smokey, but chest does not. But just in case, I use a cheap foam chest for that task.

I wrap in 2 layers of foil then a towel before I put it in the ice chest. I've never had an issue with the ice chest smelling like smoke (and I've packed it for holidays).
