Vegetarians and vegans pay heed, new research shows plants know when they’re being eaten. And they don’t like it.

That plants possess an intelligence is not new knowledge, but according to Modern Farmer, a new study from the University of Missouri shows plants can sense when they are being eaten and send out defense mechanisms to try and stop it from happening.

The study was carried out on thale cress or Arabidopsis as it’s known scientifically – that is closely related to broccoli, kale, mustard greens and other siblings of the brassica family and popular for science experiments. It’s commonly used in experiments because it was the first plant to have its genome sequenced, and scientists are intimately familiar with how it works.

They hear themselves being devoured
quote:

In the study, caterpillars were placed on Arabidopsis, a small flowering plant related to cabbage and mustard.

Using a laser and a tiny piece of reflective material on the leaf of the plant, Cocroft was able to measure the movement of the leaf in response to the chewing caterpillar.

Cocroft and Appel then played back recordings of caterpillar feeding vibrations to one set of plants, but played back only silence to the other set of plants.

When caterpillars later fed on both sets of plants, the researchers found that the plants previously exposed to feeding vibrations produced more mustard oils, a chemical that is unappealing to many caterpillars.

quote:

'Plants have many ways to detect insect attack, but feeding vibrations are likely the fastest way for distant parts of the plant to perceive the attack and begin to increase their defenses,' Cocroft said.

'Caterpillars react to this chemical defense by crawling away, so using vibrations to enhance plant defenses could be useful to agriculture,'

Disgusting herbivore scum. I swear, you must not have a soul if you are able to chew up those helpless, defenseless little plants, all for your own selfish gain.

I AM DISGUSTED. END THE SOCIETAL PRESSURE TO KILL INNOCENT PLANTS!!

I know several vegans and vegetarians, and not a single one of them do it because they feel sorry for animals or some stupid shite like that. All the ones I know do it for health reasons.

Good thing I'm a fruitarian... I only eat things that have actually fallen from the tree or bush, and that are in fact, dead already.

You should tell them that being a vegetarian is not necessarily healthier than eating meat.

If they are health nuts then they realize that red meat every once in a while is actually really good for you.

I think the only vegetarians I've known were all from when I lived in California. I'd say most of them were vegetarians/vegans because of ethical reasons.

Obviously Northern California is not the same as Louisiana.

I didn't say they weren't a little foolish or stubborn, just not so crazy as to care about a cow's emotions. I personally think eating 90% of your food from plants is a good idea, with only a small portion of your diet being meat.

Same. Humans don't need to eat a ton of meat. I love me a good steak but I only eat one probably once or twice a month. If I eat any kind of meat it's usually chicken.

I've always pointed out the hypocrisy, but they don't care.

Whenever we visit, they would roast a pig or goat and just plop it on the table.
