So ive been bored at work and picked a grocery bag of sawtooth acorns, and went down to the church and picked a bag full of swamp chesnut acorns. Question is how long will they keep? Im wanting to pour them out for deer and would love to wait until opening weekend of gun season "Thanksgiving week" so i can hunt all week.

wash them off with plain water and then let them dry. keep them dry and in a cool spot and don't touch with bare hands anymore.

they should keep for months.

Just keep them for acorn wine

If you want them to keep, just keep them moist and put them in the refrigerator for now. DO NOT FREEZE. That's what farmers do over the winter, then plant them in the spring.

quote:

Acorns lose viability when they dry out, so if they are not planted immediately, they must be stored under moist conditions. Since moisture causes oak acorns to germinate, refrigerate the acorns to slow germination. Place acorns in plastic bags (e.g., heavy duty zip-closure bags) and store them in the refrigerator until planting. Do not allow the acorns to freeze, as this will kill them. Even when stored in plastic bag in the refrigerator, most acorns will eventually germinate, and the emerging roots are easily damaged or may decay during storage. Therefore, it's a good idea to plant your acorns as soon as you can.

Reminds me of a funny story. Several years ago I knew an older man who would bring five or six acorns on a hunt with him. He would place them around his stand and then pick them up on the way out. That was some funny shite

I understand. He hunted in a pine thicket and thought he would attract the deer by feeding them.

I did this with over 10 gallons of acorns once.
the deer did not increase their visitations but the tree rats were everywhere.
