CFP hopes vs. BCSCG hopes

I was just wondering to myself, How many schools have reasonable playoff hopes? and then How many schools would have had reasonable BCSCG hopes under last year's system?
Without getting too neurotic about it, here's the simple criteria I'll go with here, knowing that it isn't 100% accurate--this is just for perspective:
CFP hopes: Any Big Fiver with two or fewer losses, and any other undefeated school.
BCSCG hopes: Any Big Sixer with one or no losses
(Obviously these criteria aren't solid--there are rare historic anomalies within all three)
As of today's standings:
Schools with any reason at all to hope for a playoff berth: 39
Schools with a shot at a hypothetical BCSCG berth: 20
This, I believe, makes for a more meaningful regular season.
If there were a 16-team playoff, I'd guess that any Big Fiver with three or fewer losses, and anyone else with one or zero losses, would have a reasonable shot. That's 55 schools. Seems fine, but it allows for the possibility for a team to tank a game toward the end of the season just because they can.
I think anywhere between four and eight is just fine. It's enough for a legitimate field to be drafted, and it's not so many that the regular season takes a hit.

Uh your logic is flawed. Why are teams with 2 losses considered for one and not the other?
I'd be shocked if any 2 loss teams are in the playoff.

we'd be looking at FSU vs SEC champ like last year
Nope

I think it'd be more like 5 vs 10 for the other or something similar.
But to say 40 teams today have a chance to make the playoff is comical.

Care to show me some schools who fit my criteria who can't possibly make it to the playoff if they win out and get some help?

Win out and they're in:
Ole Miss
Mississippi State
Georgia
Florida State
Win out + help, and they're in:
Kansas State
Baylor
TCU
Duke
Michigan State
Ohio State
Minnesota
Nebraska
Notre Dame
Oregon
Arizona
Arizona State
Utah
Alabama
Auburn
That's 19. Not sure who my 20th was, but you get the idea.
