Sure, Leto had a decent performance in Dallas Buyers Club. And I like Leto. But he shouldn't have won the Oscar. Especially in a year with a performance like Fassbender's in 12 Years a Slave. It was damn near perfect. The Academy really got this one wrong IMO. I can't help but believe that Leto got extra points for playing a transgender woman with AIDS.

Edit: Leto's performance was better than decent. It was good.

One character was meant to be sympathetic; one was meant to be hated.

On the whole, though, that battle would be a toss up!

I'm not really all that bothered by it. After rewatching 12 Years tonight, I was just reminded how good Fassbender was.

The Academy is extremely politically correct.

I would think slavery would have more of an impact in this comparison.

I agree with you in that I think Fassbender should have won, but I can't say Leto didn't deserve it. He really was fantastic in Dallas Buyers Club.

Yes, but that doesn't quite tell the whole story. More like: Compassionate, kind transgender woman dying of AIDS vs. Vile, abusive, unconscionable Southern slave-owner.

Agreed. It was also hard to believe that the African girl in 12 years won best supporting actress. She had 1 good quick scene that she got to rehearse over and over... Anybody could do that. She barely spoke in the movie besides that one scene. J-Law deserved the Oscar (even though I hated AH).

Not when the character that was nominated is a cruel slave owner. Same reason why Leo got zero Oscar attention for his awesome performance in Django Unchained.

Uh, you know it's kind of subjective. Both were terrific, imo.
