My parents had the same rule. This wasn't the standard treatment for everyone else?

no they don't. They aren't going to start teaching calculus to freshman b/c they have to get to calc 2 and diff eq later in high school.

They do offer Calculus to freshman now. My school did at least, as well as every other magnet school in the county.

On top of all that, she could be knocking out about half of that if she would get started at aftercare.....

I used to be an aftercare teacher, and often was stuck running the "homework room". OH MY GOSH. The worst.

It was elective, and there was always a few who would choose it instead of being outside even though they had no intentions of doing homework.

That said, once I kicked the bad ones out, the good ones always completed all their homework for the night. They were free to play by 5pm when they got home. Plus, it's like they have a free tutor if you have a high school student or whatever working it like I was.

it doesn't take hours to study for a spelling test, or a social studies quiz. If they did the homework, that is most likely studying enough.

Totally. Why only have the kid do schoolwork for 7 hours straight when it can be 9 hours straight?

Playtime? F THAT.

The district does, but they go to the best school in the district at their level.

I agree with this thread 100%. Homework (especially before high school) is fricking retarded.

This is probably been answered already, but what kind of school is she attending? Is it one with high academic expectations?

Parents really should just request meetings with all their kids teachers and do into the meetings with open minds and not thinking that their child can't be the problem.

You know that can work for teachers also.

I always suspected that this was so parents can teach their kids the subject matter that the teachers are incapable or unwilling to go through in class.

My parents taught me long division, trig, and algebra. My teachers in elementary and middle school never once went over it themselves.

Homework assigned by teachers who were good at their job was a different animal. You were exposed to the material in class and the homework was a refresher plus some challenging work that would drive discussion the following day.

It does work both ways.
But odds are if the other parents aren't also scheduling meetings because their children are having to do homework for 4 hours every night, then the problem might be with the child or another factor affecting the child.

If other parents are complaining but not meeting with the teacher, then they are being more of a problem by not saying anything and letting the teacher think that everything is okay.

why are you comparing the top 1% of students in the country to public schools in Louisiana?
do

and i seriously doubt that kids are taking calculus as freshman in high school. Are they taking Alegrba 1 in 6th grade, alebra 2 in 7th, and advanced math in 8th? Do they take a geometry class, or are they taking that in 5th grade? Just looking at Baton Rouge Magnet's course offerings, there's no math course offered above calculus.
What math class would they take in high school after their freshman calculus class?

My school was a public school. So were many of the other schools in my county alone that offers calculus to freshman and sophomores.

Again, just my old school, but here are a list of the AP classes offered.

LINK

You had to take Calculus 1 freshman year, and Calculus 2 sophomore year. And the engineering high school had even more AP math classes. My school was a liberal arts school.

You've either have been away from schools for a long time until your kids have started school, or just don't pay attention. I feel safe in saying that every school now that meets AYP has classes above Calculus.

No. If we don't move they will go to George Welch, Good Hope, WM. We go to church with a lot of OCS staff. We were going to put them in OCS from the start and they all told us to save our money, George Welch is better.

Huh? How would a teacher know how long it's taking your kid to do homework? Between open house, parent teacher conferences, and notes on progress reports/report cards.. teachers reach out to parents plenty. They aren't mind readers. If you have an issue with something, the obvious solution is to schedule a meeting and go in and REASONABLY speak with a teacher.

If the teacher happens to be unreasonable, schedule a meeting with both the teacher and his/her boss.

shite. How is this so hard? If I have an issue with something being assigned to me at work, I sit down with my boss and talk about it. Do people really avoid talking this much?

regardless, that's not normal at schools in Louisiana, especially public schools.
I took calculus as a senior.

so did you guys not take a math class your junior and senior years?
i still don't see a math class over calculus, like diff eq.

I"m just going over my math classes in my schooling.
advanced math, calculus in high school.
Calc 1, Calc 2, Calc 3, Diff EQ in college in engineering.
