I wonder if this will remain. I mean, how often is he really talked about outside of the U.S.? And we've been around 230 years? Tack another almost 800 years onto that and he could all but disappear from history.

(Don't believe me? Think about how many massive powers, led by countless kings and emperors have fallen into historical obscurity in the last 1000 years?)

Hitler I do agree with.

My impression when I've been in a lot of other countries is that Lincoln is by far the most revered American. I'd say Jefferson is probably next.

Rightly or wrongly, I think while much of the world admires Washington and most of the rest of the founding fathers, they came from very privileged backgrounds and were able to leverage their considerable resources. I think many outside the US see Lincoln as the ultimate "rags-to-riches", raising one's station in life by talent and hard work alone, quintessentially American story.

Again, not saying it's right or wrong, but that's been my impression.

This. The victors always dictate history. It will be written as it benefits the political agenda.

Earth will survive, but industrial civilization will not be around with the lack of any fuel to run it.

Eh, I was more speaking of life on earth. Not the matter or social/economic status.
