I am about to move in the next few days for work and I had a few questions for the mighty tech board.

This summer I got Sling Box because it's the bomb diggity. I have it at my mom's house on an extra DTV box that no one uses. They have the whole shibang in terms of channels and sports. So I was thinking...would it not be financially prudent to just get a kick arse internet set up and just stream TV from the DTV box? This would be in lieu of getting comcast cable which is the only provider in the complex. If I did, though:

1) what internet speed should I aim for?

2) I have a choice (I believe) between AT&T (they said UVerse was there but it wasn't online but the complex is brand new so I am not sure) and Comcast. Which is yalls favorite for internet?

4) Would yall just say frick it and get a Comcast bundle?

5) Each provider has a data cap I wanna say at 150 GB. With me streaming all my TV and surfing the web will I destroy my data? (Thanks straightcashhomey!)

I will be working a shitload but I still like to watch my AM ESPN and have TBS on in the afternoons. Just like the background noise. I also spend all my free time when I am alone just dicking around on the laptop so I do surf a lot.

I appreciate yalls help because, frankly, I am new to all of this shite. At school I just deferred to my more tech-savvy buddy so yalls input would be great!

Nice! And yea, data caps are lame as hell. That said, I don't really think I will reach my data cap. Sure, I might be streaming all of my TV but I will be working most of the time and so far my experience with SlingBox has mirrored yours.

I guess the real question is what speed of internet I should get? AT&T has 6 mbps as their top option without UVerse and Comcast, well, Comcast has a metric shite ton of speed but I'd get the medium speed I figure.

I have been hooking my Slingbox up to my TV in my parents house on weekends to watch multiple games and it works really well with only a few moments of graininess. Why not just get a bad arse internet package and stick with slingbox? God knows rent is gonna kill me with or without TV.

150 GB seems low. I have a 250 GB cap on one of the lower tier plans with Suddenlink. I download or stream about 50% of what I watch and I flirt with or hit the cap every single month. This month, for example, I'm at about 230 GB used and I still have 13 days left on the cycle. I don't know how much data a sling box uses, but I'd imagine streaming all of your TV watching would eat though 150 GB pretty quickly.

ETA: The bottleneck on bandwidth will be the upload speed from your parents house.

ETA2: This month my usage is a little higher than normal because I downloaded the 45 GB preinstall of Halo: MCC

Are you going to stream FROM home OUT...

If so, your data cap will not matter..Your UPLOAD speed will be your focus

It would be a lot more work to get it set up, but if your parents have a satellite receiver that they don't use I would get a dish on Craigslist and just hook the receiver up at your house. Satellite company won't know any better and then you don't have to worry about streaming. Setting up a satellite dish by yourself is tough but not impossible, and if nothing else I'm sure you could find someone on Craigslist who would do it for a fee.

AT&T doesn not enforce it. I'm not sure any company does.

I used 250+ a month

I do this at the camp. We have an extra Directv receiver that stays at the camp 365 days a year. Bought a dish on ebay. Pretty easy to aim using a compass.

Thanks guys!

About upload speed: My parents have the maxed out charter internet that is SUPPOSED to be the #1 upload speed. I have never had issues with it in that regard. I have never had trouble watching Slingbox with the source. It's always been either a bad service area or weak wifi. I worry about killing their data cap but I think they should be fine.

About the dish: I actually have a dish here but I am in an apartment that would likely frown upon that and even if I did get it I have a view of the interior courtyard thing so idk if I could get a signal.

So, in the end, are yall under the impression that I should just get a comcast tv/internet bundle or will streaming all of my TV be a prudent move? I am about to call soon and get it going and I'd hate to give comcast more money than those bastards need.

Without knowing much about a slingbox, if your parents have Dish Network and you just want to watch ESPN and TBS on occasion, could you go with a Roku or Amazon FireTV? Both have WatchESPN (not sure about TBS) and then you wouldn't have to worry about your parents' setup at all.

They have DTV but I use my buddy's WatchESPN. I went ahead and just did the internet. I already have an old Roku and an AppleTV so that'll be my two receivers so I should be set

DSL works great for me. Parents have the LUS fiber upload though.
