This guy knows a little bit about athletes.

While many fans, based on their recent comments on NOLA.com, are focusing on Brees' arm strength, they may have missed the fact that the arm is not (or should not) become the source of strength for the throwing motion. In fact, the arm is nothing more than a "delivery mechanism" for guidance at ball release toward a target.

the measure of a quarterback's arm strength is based on his ability to throw a 18 yard "comeback route," where the receiver runs eighteen yards, plants, and comes back to the 15 to make the catch. The "zip," according to Manning, is how many RPM's the QB can put on the ball.

Next to former Denver Bronco QB John Elway and the Patriots' Tom Brady, Brees throws the "comback" as good as (with more power and accuracy) anyone I've seen in recent times - the operative word being "accuracy."

This is a good comment:
quote:

Remember back in the day when Brees was hitting long balls consistently? Remember when Jahri Evans, Carl Nicks, and Jonathan Goodwin created a pocket that seemed to hold up forever? There's a lot that goes into whether a QB is successful and it isn't all throwing mechanics, either. If receivers can't get separation soon enough and the line can't block long enough and the threat of the run doesn't freeze the defensive line or linebackers long enough, Brees will have to wait longer to make the throw, use more time and steps to evade the rush, and spend more time looking over receiver options before he can let the ball go, often from a less than optimal stance. By that time the receiver is farther down the field and the defensive rushers farther into the backfield.

Brees certainly deserves blame for bad decisions, but it's reductive and juvenile to place all blame for everything related to passing on him.

Arm strength is completely overrated. Doesn't mean shite if you can't hit your target. Otherwise the Jamarcus Russell's, Jeff George's and Kyle Boller's of the world would be HOFers instead of guys like Brady, Brees and Montana.

I agree, people are fools. You don't judge someone's ability to throw long passes by studying them throwing long passes; you study how they throw another completely different pass to draw conclusions. How ignorant of everyone.

When I saw Brees rare back and throw it all he had I knew it would be a bomb.

Too bad it was a 10 yard pass.

I remember listening to the radio broadcast of the Saints-Colts game in George's rookie year and Archie claimed JG had the best mechanics he'd ever seen

So not only is it not just arm strength, it's even not just arm strength and mechanics

This is clearly a red herring from the wise and honorable VOR. "Arm strength" is but an adjective in this instance. Brees' throws have clearly lost zip so it's irrelevant whether it's b/c of his arm or his setup or what.

Disagree - the 25 yard out is a key throw in football and Brees has struggled lately at making that throw - fitting it over LB and in front of/around the safety. Everything that's 20 yards downfield (or longer) seemingly has to be straight up and down the seam between the hash marks, which is why Colston and Graham are always getting lit up. WR's would much rather be breaking towards the sideline (and towards relative safety) than up and down the seams where there's a safety waiting to hammer them. Colston and Graham have been our two best WR's over the past 3-4 years but one (or both) is always banged up because of the beating they take on Breesus' floaters into the teeth of the defense.

Exactly. This is a semantics argument that is an attempt to confuse the issue. Who cares if it is his shoulder or his hip flexor.

Brees is having problems with his ball hanging in downfield passes.

Colston and Graham are really having problems with it. Nightmares of decapitation, even.
