When did people start putting the $ behind the numbers?

Why does it make more sense to put the $in front of the numbers?

I think some people do it because typing on a device the numbers are often on the first keyboard screen and the $ sign on the second screen. Serious answer.

But have you ever thought of Why we do it?

Hell, we use obsolete things all the time because we are too stupidly stubborn to change.

QWERTY keyboard? Designed for use with typewriters. Obsolete.
Fax machines? Obsolete.
Newspapers? Only good for cheap wrapping paper, starting a fire, and crawfish boils.

I work in a lab, I know about units. People still use fax machines. Qwerty keyboard is still the standard, I don't know what keyboard you use.
