Did the Patriots have an illegal formation on the blocked field goal last play?

You can only have 6 players on one side of the snapper on a punt or field goal.

Legal play.

quote:

What the rule changes: "(a) When Team A presents a punt, field-goal attempt or a Try Kick formation, a Team B player, who is within 1 yard of the line of scrimmage, must have his entire body outside the snapper's shoulder pads at the snap. (b) When Team A presents a field-goal or Try Kick formation: (1) No more than six Team B players may be on the line of scrimmage on either side of the snapper at the snap; Penalty: For illegal formation by the defense, loss of 5 yards from the previous spot. (2) Team B players cannot push teammates on the line of scrimmage into the offensive formation. Penalty: For unnecessary roughness, loss of 15 yards from the previous spot."

To shift right before the snap wouldn't someone be lined up above the snapper? Isn't that illegal?

I'm not sure, let's check the 5,329 chapters of the 327,418 page rulebook.

Anywhere in the formation is how the rule sounds.

Nah.. They shifted some before the snap. The ball was just snapped in the spot I stopped the video there so that's their formation.

I haven't seen a single thing mentioned about this on TV or on twitter. Which makes me think.. is this still a rule? I'm pretty certain it is.

Yes, I think the patriots got flagged for it earlier in the year actually.

I've seen it called before too..maybe in the last 3 weeks

You are correct and you should email a few major websites tomorrow. This game may go under protest.

I found this article from 2013 about rule changes:
quote:

On field goal or extra point plays, the defense cannot have more than 6 players on the line of scrimmage on either side of the snapper. If they do, it will result in a 5 yard Illegal formation penalty.

I've already written the letters and stapled the Polaroids to them. I just need to buy some stamps.

That wouldn't make sense anyway. You're not allowed to line up directly in front of the line snapper, so you can't have 11 men on the field without 6+ players on one side of him.

Wut. 6 on one side and 5 on the other is how you have to line up in the NFL. If they're on the line of scrimmage.

6|5. That's 11.

Pretty sure that is what he is saying

As in that was a dumb rule that needed to be clarified to on the line of scrimmage because if not, then any formation was at risk of being penalized if someone moved

Hes talking about having MORE than 6 on one side, obviously you will have atleast 6 on one side and 5 on the other. They have 7 on one side in this pic but 1 is off the line of scrimmage
