Thanks for all the ideas guys.

It's a nephew so I'm slightly uncomfortable going the BB gun route. But maybe I'll ask his dad

It's okay to be the cool uncle who corrupts your siblings children.

Look, I know you said 50 bucks yet I have to say one of the best gifts I have ever received was a Louisiana lifetime hunting and fishing license when I was a kid. Currently they're 200-500 bucks depending on the kids age. I got mine for a birthday present when I was 13 from my dad. I hunt and fish many species and the 200 he spent over 20 years ago would not cover 2 years of licenses now plus the headache of actually having to go get it every year. I also lived in Texas for 10 years and did not have to pay out of state fees. I know they have lifetimes in other states too if he is not in LA. I know that does not help the budget yet maybe you could get creative and go in with others etc

I was given a hand made Indian knife when I was 5, Avery majestic bone handle. With this knife I created my first long bow, and fashioned my own arrows. By far the best gift I've ever received.

This.

May not be the coolest gift, but would definitely be the most appreciate/used gift.

flashlight, binoculars, anything camouflage.

regarding the gun and knife - that is a personal choice and every parent knows his/her child best. was too early for both my son and daughter but not by much!

The next outdoorsy thing I plan on buying my 6 year old is a small cast net (3 foot or so). He loves when I use mine and gets excited to see all the little wild things I catch. I caught a small gar in it this past weekend and he's still talking about it.

Good luck.

This is a winner. A camo hat with a bill light is cool along with cheap binoculars.

I got mine a couple of cheap duckcalls and a little bag that I filled with camping shite from the wal marks (i.e. kid's mosquito repellant, a survival whistle, one of those cans that sounds like a doe bleat when you turn it over, etc.) also got him a little camo rain poncho and a camo cap...

he was set up for the outdoors!...
